Politics makes odd bedfellows...

Okay, so I've never liked that phrase - "bedfellows" has some... uh... connotations that aren't my speed.

Nevertheless, it's an appropriate description of what's been happening in my current game. I've been "good" in the vast majority of my games, but decided that I'd play a little differently in my current Gigantic galaxy, Normal difficulty game. Of course, just as I reached Demonic status {insert evil cackling and wacky music}, I found my first neighbors... the Altarian Republic.

I was fairly isolated (in the SW corner of the map, and colonizing both East and North) when I ran into them... at first (and for a long time), relations with them were "cool". However, I took no hostile action against them and, in fact, established many trade routes with them and the Torian Confederation (which was the next race I encountered.)

Over time, they grew to like me - *despite* my Demonic status {cue cackle & organ again} - as did the Torians (who, in this game, are the most powerful of the aliens).

Anyway, the point of this rant is - I'm now ALLIED with the Altairians and the Torians... and each of us is at war with the Yor, Drengin and Arceans (who, apparently have the NE corner of the map - as I've yet to see them). So, despite my evil nature, I've somehow attracted the only two good races to be my allies.

What's particularly odd about this is that - at an earlier stage in the game - the Altarians *could* have steamrolled me... I'd spread myself thin and would have been unable to prevent the loss of at least a handful of colonies.

Of course, I think there might be another reason I've got friends in weird places... something to do with the SIX Ranger Fortunes that have come my way as a member of the Universalist party during the game!

Anybody else found themselves allied (for a significant period of time) with a race of the opposite morality? Did I stumble upon some accidental strategy (not unlikely, given my odd playing style), or is this some sort of AI issue regarding Alliances?

Well, back to the game... :)

I have. It was a game of half and half (half Pure Good, half Pure Evil, and I was Pure Evil). My nearest neighbors were the Drengin, who were Pure Good. For practically the whole game (until I got fed up of the stalemate), we had friendly relations. Maybe it was the fact that I had the best military, or the fact that I was trying to take them culturally. I also had the Yor (Pure Good) surrender to me, for no reason at all. Of course, it might have been that long recession we had.

Some odd circumstances, indeed... I don't think I've ever seen the Drengin be good in any of my games... But I, too, have experienced that "We give up" (but what was I doing?) thing... guess to many McDonalds spreading across the galaxy, huh?

I guess I'm the only person who starts games with all the major empires on random alignment. And I met the Yor about 4 turns before they surrendered, and they were on the other side of the galaxy.
