So *THAT*s what a wormhole is for!

Had something interesting happen over the weekend on a Huge map, with mixed Bright/Intelligent AIs. Hero was on the back side of the Arcean empire (one of the Intelligent AIs) when the Arcean line on the military graph spikes like nobody's business. I shift some production to military to stay in the ballpark, but not fast enough, they start making truely obnoxious demands that I didn't feel I could make and still be in the game, so I told them to take a hike.

War is declared, and all of a sudden, *30* dreadnoughts pop out of the star cluster that is the home cluster of the Arceans, all headed straight for hero. All with rather nasty stats, as well. Hero is cornered, with its extreme range on one side, and the edge of the map on the other, and all these dreadnoughts less than a sector away. So I look around (thank goodness for Eyes of the Universe) and see two things nearby. One, an Arcean starbase on a military resource, and two, a wormhole entrance. Hero managed to whack the starbase and make it almost all the way to the wormhole in one turn, and it was still a breathholding experience watching all the dreadnoughts come thundering in, stopping 2-4 spaces away from hero, just to have hero escape out the wormhole on the next turn.

And talk about attitude. I built up to the point that I'm noticably higher than the Arceans in military power, the UP declares galactic peace, and they immediately declare war again! I'm a peaceful coexistance kind of player, but the Arceans are gonna have to go, especially considering that they have an alliance with the Altarians and Torians. Then again, those two don't really want to be at war, they keep sueing for peace every few years, I gain tech/money, then they get drug back into the war.

Also caught the Altarians and Torians trying to sneak several dreadnoughts down the edge of the map. Inflicted a 4:1 loss ratio, and then they decided that it wasn't the best of ideas (I could have told them that. That trick doesn't work when you're up against someone with Eyes of the Universe) and withdrew.

You know, it's funny, last time I got caught in this position (Saintly but still at war with the Altairans/Torians/Arceans) and on good terms with the Drengin, it was the same cycle. The Arceans were trying to take me out, dragging the other two into it repeatedly. And the Torians weren't doing well that game either.

Popup,

Another good use for wormholes is to use them for deployment of USS Hero (and any other survey ships) to more useful sectors of the map once the current area has been completely explored and harvested.

I will frequently leave wormholes untouched (writing their location down) until Hero has noting to do. Head to the nearest one and voila!, even though it's destination is random, Hero usually ends up in a far more profitable part of the map, saving mucho turns of travel.

Another good thing about wormholes...

You apparently get sent only to another sector in your ship's range. So you don't have to worry about "doing a Voyager" and getting sent clear across the galaxy. Instead, you should end up somewhere in known space (or adjacent thereto).

Ummm, no. You can be sent anywhere. I routinely get sent well beyond any possible range. I think it is weighted in some way vs. your range, but you can get sent outside it, no problem.

yeah, I stopped using wormholes on huge and gigantic maps the first time it threw me somewhere where it took *YEARS* to get back into the ship's range. Ummm... Oops?

Definitely avoid wormholes until Hero's speed gets to at least 4, and enough range to cover half the map.

Slitherin. Click on the corvette, then right click on a square in range, It will auto pilot to the square. (the crew being put in stasis) It can't do anything else untill it gets back but you can get it back.
