how to message other players

Is it at all possible to message other players in this game? I assume it is but I cant work out how and the manuals been no help.

In-game you hit enter to open the chat window, then tab through player names/allied chat to send to those specifically

In the ICO lobby you can use /w to whisper to players.

I don't think it's possible to whisper from lobby into a game, though.
