More computer opponents?

Is there any way of increasing the cap on computer opponents? I would like to start a truly epic game with 20 or so computer opponents with no teams.

Nope, there's no way to increase the player limit.

Thanks. Where would one drop a line so as to make a proposition to someone, anyone, who could increase the player cap?

Well, Ironclad would be the only ones who could do it, but I don't think it has much of a chance of happening

Is there a limit to pirate factions?

Not that I can tell, you can add as many pirate bases to the map as you like
