on sundays johnny l. walks like a
spider with a walker to add 4 legs
it’s step by step of familiar trails over
asphalt and fugitive grass growing in cracks
in the sidewalk
he has a date for mass at eleven before
he visits his anita at roseland in the serenity section

they have lunch together and he tells
her about the grandson Charlie and his
climb up the white man’s ladder
nice house in the suburbs with shopping
malls and six flavors of vanilla
while he tosses bits of dried bread at the
ducks vacationing at the memorial pond
he always talks about the night they went
to the homecoming dance and the long walk
home after--that willow that hung to the ground
with honeysuckle in the air
like a familiar scratch in an old 45
he talks about that first kiss and how
embarrassed he felt when she noticed
his excitement
chuckling ending in a cough he says
“them was different days, baby.”
around 4 when the air starts it’s evening
chill
he walks slowly home waving goodbye
at the gate
