Randomize AI for the opponents...
...but how random, and how wextreme?

Hi,
Being a n00b, I currently play games on a Medium map, "Normal" and I tick the Randomize AI" box...so does that mean that I could have a really dumb opponent (=simple AI algos used) and a really smart one (=complex AI algos used) on the same map, in order to average "normal" difficulty?? That sounds a bit extreme as, understandably, the smartest opponent will wipe everyone out in a matter of months...
Maybe I should untick this box until I get better?
Oh and should I stick to medium maps? I like them because games don't last too long. Does playing on a gigantic map make the game harder, due to the fact that I have to research more propulsion techs, life support?
One last question: on the Treaties tab, I can see a "Team" description, but I don't know how to teamp up with someone else and as far as I can remember, the AI has never teamed up with me. What's the difference with Alliances?
