The enemy AI controls your ships too?

The Drengin were attacking from the "north", and I had a stack of six constructors heading that way on autopilot. I tried clicking on them to divert them. But those ships were bound and determined to rush "north" to their death.
I think the Drengin empire had some sort of tractor beam that was pulling those ships toward it. No matter how hard I tried, those ships were pulled, pulled, pulled north. I think I did convince one of them to turn away. But the others rushed to their death!
Wouldn't it be awesome if the game would wait until you had finished giving orders for the turn (and had pressed some sort of button) before moving all the ships on autopilot?
Most of the time, I really do feel like the enemy AI is controlling my ships instead of me.
