The Fundamentalists took *ALL* the Drengin and Yor planets!

Ever seen that happen? I'm not talking the Fundamentalists pop up and declare war, I'm saying the very event that created the Fundamentalists handed them every Drengin and Yor planet in the game. The Yor have been wiped out of two consecutive games that way (they were a minor power in both), and the Drengin from one of the two.

And the game didn't even tell me that the races were gone! Of course, the first time it happened it was on a Tiny map, so I noticed during that turn, so I, being the evil slime that I was playing that go around, decided that before they ceased to exist, I'd negotiate everything I could for peace from both races. Amazing that the AI fell for that. "Hi, I'm out of the game, but before I go, sure I'll give you all my money, influence, and tech."

A lot of people talk about how easy evil is and how hard good is, but this just shows why it isn't that simple. I've never seen the fundies wipe out TWO civs, but plenty of times they have taken out a small civ and chunks of others.

I've seen the Drengin get wiped out a few times, but usually they just get a bite taken out of them. Strangely, the Yor haven't lost any planets to the actual event as far as I can tell from my games. Perhaps they got lucky, or shifted more to neutral. They are usually target #1 for the Fundies once they get themselves in order.

My very first game of GalCiv (which gave me an initially kind of annoyed opinion of the game) was going as smoothly as any first game goes until the Fundies showed up. The Drengin were absorbed in the initial event, while the Yor were gradually conquered. I was kind of evil-leaning so I was the next victim. All I could think at the time was "damn, now that's one killer random event!"

I think there might be a minimum number of planets converted when this event hits, it's definitely not a set percentage of your total planets. I've had it hit when myself, the Yor, and the Drengin were all evil: the Yor lost 50% of their worlds, the Drengin about 30%, I lost maybe 10% or less. The Yor were the smallest, the Drengin next biggest, and I was far larger than either. If there is a minimum number then that would explain why this event was so devastating in a smaller galaxy.

In one of my first games I had the I-League appearing in one planet just between me and the Torians. They took the Torians out and then ... me: all my planets defected, one by one :sniff!:

Gotta keep that moral up Nastav. Or they defect. Oh I'm not looking forward to the fundamentalist event takeover nope.

I think maybe the fundamentalist thing was added precisely because evil seemed an easier way to go.

Dang Goody Goody Do Gooders. It's all a plot to stop the G.R.O.S.S. (Get Rid Of Slimy alienS) empire from dominating. It will fail of course.

Ahhh... the Fundamentalists, bane of Evil Empires(tm) everywhere. Happened to me once, almost destroying my entire economy in the process. They took the Sol system you see, which also happened to be my Economic Capital and the starting point of all my trade routes. There was much cursing and fist-waving at the monitor that day, let me tell you ;p

Ming, I feel sorry for you even if you are evil! :) What did you do to poor Earth to drop its morale like that?

The first time I tried to play evil, the Fundamentalists popped up in the middle of a nasty war and half my empire defected. Needless to say, the game ended shortly thereafter, and I've always played evil a little bit differently since then.

I've had the fundie event 4 times. Never while I was evil. Although after the first time it popped up, I wasn't as willing to play evil for a few games. ;)

I've seen the Fundie event wipe out both the Drengin and Yor Twice and wipe out Drengin and hurt the Yor twice. That's right, I've never seen the Drengin survive the Fundie Creation. Luck of the RNG I suppose...

In one game the Fundamentalists popped up scattered all over the map. They took a cluster from the Drengin on the far left, a couple from the Yor on the far right and one from me in the middle. It made me wonder if the number of planets taken are tied to HOW evil you are. In that game the Drengin had a score of like 2, the Yor were in the 20s and I actually was neutral...i was on the evil end of neutral, but my UI was still blue.

Further the Fundies LOVED me. I traded a bunch of useless tech for some of their good tech. I then reconquered my planet from them. They STILL loved me. I sold them 16 different kinds of Soldier and Planet Defense tech and bled them for ridiculous amounts of money. Thanks to my tech, neither the Drengin nor the Yor were ever able to fully reconquer their lost planets.

When I handed them the secrets to Dreadnaught technology I simply had to chuckle over that original misunderstanding that had my good friends the Fundamentalists mistakenly take one of my planets.

This event can be quite nasty, IMO it's nastier the later in the game it occurs. I had one about 3/4 of the way through the game once and they had -all- my tech, about 60000-70000 in gold, and they almost immediately allied with the Torians and the Altarians. Now that's just plain ugly: 3-way wars, insta-built dreadnaughts, fully developed planets with large populations and massive infrastructure, immunity to influence, etc.

And that, folks, is why I play Mr. Goody-Goody... the fundies can see my alignment an my morale, but they can't see me handing off Overlords to the Yor so they can tear chunks out of the Altarians while I build my constructor fleet :)

aha. Cataleptic, you may be just the evil pretender goody goody we are looking for here at G.R.O.S.S.

I have never experienced the fundamentalist thing but sheesh, that's harsh. Your capital planent. Does anyone know the criteria for what determines which planets they take?

A simple defense agaisnt the fundamentalists, i build on every sector with planets inside starbases that primaraly boost the production, if the things get worst you could boost defenses, culture or military aid but i always keep at least two transports with troops at each starbase, it's costly but you keep a force ready to go for a invasion and a good defense against rebelions, cultural flips or fundamentalists event, i an evil and i guess that i an ready to they, KEEP COMING >:( >:(

It's probably cheaper to just build a warship and two (battle)transports at each system and keep them parked in orbit, and keep a home defense fleet hovering around. Remember that

a) When a planet defects, it de-orbits any ships first

b) When a transporter is automatically de-orbited, it loads up some troops first.

Between those two factors, you get an assault ship, plus two transports (probably fully loaded for major planets) sitting right outside every defected planet.

Oooh, evil. If you weren't limited to 16 transports, you could keep enough 0-maintenance transports in orbit to deorbit the entire population in the case of a defection :)

I know, auto-deorbiting won't strip the entire population, but it could catch a lot of it.
