Technological Victory

Has anyone managed to win with a tech victory? I've tried a couple of times but a number of problems conspire to defeat me:
1. It takes absolutely ages to get to the end techs so you're in for a very long game
2. Your opponents will be developing while you research so you may fall behind militarily, culturally or economically
3. Play your cards right and become a galactic power and you risk a cultural victory by accident
4. If someone declares war on you and can't be appeased you have to fight him out, risking military or cultural victory (last game I played the races off against each other in a balancing act. Eventually the Drengins gained an edge and it quickly became a two horse race. I beat them into submission but found all the extra planets gave me a cultural victory >:()
5. Get on brilliantly with everyone else and they will probably set up an alliance - join the alliance and you get a political victory, refuse it and you risk being overrun.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I find myself either being wiped out as the rest of the galaxy realises they can gang up on me or winning through another method accidentally :sniff!:

I've just won my second game by tech victory although it would have been easier to go for cultural victory if I really wanted.

The goal is to get your settings very good in tech and get a lot of tech starbases (buy them if you have to)
Make sure you do not get involved in any wars (so also no alliances) by trading much with all other races and then just churn out constructors. That entire game I only built colony ships and constructors and 1 excalibur (just to test it). I bought any other ships from my neighbours.

Disable the other victory conditions? Of course, that means the others will pursue a tech victory as well.

Heh, thanks. I never thought of changing the victory conditions, but I can't help but feel it's a bit of a cop out :P

I tried sitting quietly in my corner of the galaxy churning out constructors and not bothering anyone. Then the Drengins decided they wanted my tasty skin and since they had most of the remaining galaxy the wasn't much I could do about it :sniff!: I think I just need more practice (which is of course an excellent excuse to play more often LOL)

A tech victory requires you to choose the research racial abilities. Once you stay ahead in tech, you can trade techs for peace and to maintain relations. You should be able to AVOID wars, but you may need to build a few ships to stop oppertunistic AI races seeing no defenses! Remember that ahead in tech often means having the best ships, so no need to build too many.

I've had quite a few tech victories where I was NOT the largest empire, therefore no threat of a cultural or military victory.

For a tech victory you should definately NOT stay at home :)
You should colonize as much as you can as quickly as possible and dig in then. Then slowly conquer some planets with culture. Just make sure you leave at least 1 and preferrably 2 big empires alone and trade with those like crazy.
Also try to have those two be at war a lot. That helps you get ahead more :) And buy a lot of their warships so that your military is impressive enough for them to leave you alone without needing to spend resources on it. Just make sure you give all races about the same techs, or you might unbalance their wars ;)

I just achieved a tech victory being the largest empire so it is possible...

I avoided all big influence improvements, avoided the "influence" resource, didn't upgrade any influence improvement on my SBs, avoided all alliances, kept out from war with a bunch of overlords (before getting them I managed to be powerful enough to avoid any threat, I was trading half with the drengins (who were the 2nd powerful) half with the arceans but I was a "good" civ so I had warm relations with the altarians (3rd powerful)),...

But I think this kind of victory is the toughest and was possible only because I had a pretty good start, balancing your relations being critical (as always you would say)
