Breaking other races Alliances -- Would this work?

Ok here was the scenario.  I never pulled this off because I stopped the game after a new update.

I'm the Terrans and the biggest Empire on the Block.  The number 2 guy is the Krynn.  Now, I don't like a large Jihadist Empire on my border so I want to knock them down a peg or two.  But they have allies.  Torians, Iconians, and Altarians.    The Iconians are nothing so I'm not concerned with them.  But the Torians and Altarians are my allies too.  The Krynn and I well its a bit of a cold war.

Now if I'm the aggressor and declare war on the Krynn then their allies including the 2 on my side would probably gang up on me to defend Krynn.  But if Krynn declared war on me then they are the aggressor and Torians and Altarians would defend me.

Confused yet?  Ok so here is my plan.  I declare war on the Iconians who are only allied with Krynn.  The Krynn then move in to attack me and since they declared war this forces the Torians and Altarians to declare war on Krynn.

I'm pretty sure this is how World War I turned into a big mess.  You think it would have worked?

Could have.

But, there's always a chance that they won't honour the alliance, so you'd be stuck in a dumb war with the Iconians.

Easier is to just move a bunch of transports next to Krynn worlds. They will eventually declare war on you... and no need to mess with the Iconians at all.

I really like how I can pick a fight with an enemy but look like the victim.

Personally i never saw the usefullness of an alliance; the thing about this game is like any other is to dominate the galaxy, if there are 5 players and 3 of them are allied then its basically over. You cant do doodly do ! how you gonna dominate the galaxy now!? wait until that random event where the leader of one group gets assassinated? while i try to sustain my ever growing population for years and years without any war and territorial expansion just because there are 3 allies and i cant attack any of them cause ill be ganged up ! come on ! I have solutions ..

1. An alliance should have a contractual time limit (say 50 turns, then the 2 sides drop to friendly and cannot ally for another 100 turns)... keeping in mind that you can only ally when friendly.

2. If theres no time limit; then have our spies to do the dirty work and send them to assassinate and frame one of the allied group (more complicated, but it can work through a revamped espionage system).

Didn't MOO3 have turn limits to certain treaties? I liked that feature.

Yep. You can also push the matter a little more by bullying the Krynn; demand tech and/or bc, and build influence starbases in their territory.

Also, what was your alignment? If you are good, then the other good civs will be much more likely to come to your aid. This is still a crapshoot though, since the other civs in question may not honor their alliance with you- especially if the Krynn are much more powerful, relative to your Terrans.

Funny you should mention this. The espionage system is due a revamp in 2.0, and I believe that one of the new uses for spies is to destabilize diplomatic relations. So just wait awhile, and you may get your wish.

It has been my experience that if an AI is allied to you and also to another AI, they will sit on the sidelines if you declare war on that other AI. I made a post (#22) on the SUICIDAL=IMPOSSIBLE? thread in which I described a game I had in which I made use of this quirk.
