Why long range over flak frigates?

Question:

Lately I have been considering using more flak frigates in my armada over LRMs and I was wondering why this isn't a more used strategy. The Flak frigate type vesselss have a higher damage and more armor/hull points for about the same cost. Their weapon effecting upgrades occur much lower in the tech tree as well. Sure the range is very short but since there is nothing to prevent you from closing the distance between fleets I don't see why that would really matter.

Anyone able to explain why long range vessels are king?

LRMs don't do worse than 75 damage on anything (does 100% or over on v. light armor thru medium), whereas flak does only 25% damage against medium armor and up.

Because of the damage and armor types.

And flak dps is split up between 4 guns, arranged on all sides, 90 degree firing arcs. So you have to get all 4 guns firing for them to do their max dps.. usually 2-3 will, or only 1 if yu have them sitting back facing off at the enemy.

LRMs have an overpowered damage type with their high dps.

Flak dps is high, but it's split to 4 guns, and it's damage type is the worst there is.
