Thus states Dr. Chapman.  It seems that the "unanimous" "consensus" of scientist that just KNEW man was causing global warming forgot to ask him.

There is really nothing new in his recent discovery, just a re-affirmation of the fact that despite what puny things man can do, the climate of the earth is dictated by events beyond our control.

And of course the sun is the big one in the equation.  Not like a 300 pound bull in a china shop -the whole china shop!

What Dr. Chapman is postulating, is what direct evidence has already shown.  When stripped of the hype and hyperbole, the simple truth is that the earth has not warmed in the last decade, and in the last year, started to cool.

For the sane, rational thinking people, that was hardly cause for alarm.  As a one year, or even a 10 year streak is nothing compared to the billions of years the planet has been sweating and freezing.  But to the chicken littles out there, a one year "blip", based upon erroneous data, is cause for panic and dire consequences.

My guess is that the odds are now at least 50:50 that we will see significant cooling rather than warming in coming decades," he [Dr. Chapman] writes.

And this is while man has done nothing.  A 50-50 chance.  And we think we can influence the weather?  When was the last time we stopped a hurricane?

The only thing left to expose are the snake oil salesmen who got rich off of the mass hysteria they caused.  I doubt that the Nobel committee will revoke Algore's prize, but with the number of ambulance chasers out there, perhaps some of the gullible will take it upon themselves to sue the pants off of him!  Now that will do more for reducing pollution than any Kyoto treaty as without his money, Algore will not be able to use $2200 of electricity in a month, or pollute the skies with jet exhaust.

At least it is something to look forward to.

Actually, I firmy believe man can screw up so many things. Just take a look at the overpopulated third world (or developing to be PC) countries. The environment they live in is riddled with disease, hunger, and just general crappiness. Why? Too many people extracting too much from the environment and not being responsible with it.

Even here in the ol' US of A we've our fair share of degraded ecologies. Factory and sewage emissions in our waterways, fertilizers causing eutrophication in our standing water and contributing to red tide in the Gulf of Mexico, and let's not forget that ever so lovely acid rain problem.

Entire species have been wiped out by us because they taste good. (Dodos and passenger pigeons for example) Man can truly screw up the world if he sets his mind to it...or if he sets his mind to his own profit and nothing else.

There's a fine line to walk between alarmism and decadent exploitation. As with all things, there needs to be balance. No freaking out and going nuts, but also no polluting or pillaging like it's a freakin' hobby.

Point is, man has the capacity to screw up this world if he's not careful. Ask China about their nice clean air, for instance. To err on the side of caution is never a bad thing, however, to go psychotic and start living in burrows, naked and eating wild berries is far too extreme for my tastes. On the other hand, not searching for cleaner ways to do things is starting a downward spiral of shitting the planet up for everyone.

I have a strong distaste for extremism.

Actually what you are talking about is not man screwing up the planet, but just screwing themselves. The third world is a disaster - for man, done by man. But it is not hurting the planet. Nature is tenatious. Just look at what it does to the puny attempts by man to tame it. See the grass growing up in the cracks between the skyscrapers? See the moss growing on the side of the buildings?

No, what you are describing is man killing himself. The Earth abides.

As stewards, it is common sense and good practice to work with nature and not against it. And I am all for that. I am not for setting us back to the stone age for some boogey man in a closet perpetuated by some greedy evangelists of the new world religion.

For a bit, but it can only take so much. Eventually an evironment becomes so corrupt that nothing grows there. Someday it will reclaim itself, but that can take a very long time.
