Two questions from the Demo...

1. In the full version is there an in-game encyclopedia? I'm trying to figure out what tree path to research, but the description of what a particular tech allows me to build doesn't allow me to view what it actually does. It just shows that researching this tech allows you to build this thing, but it doesn't tell what that thing is or does. I also cannot follow the tech tree in any "overall picture" to find out where I'm going. If a tech brings up a new improvement to build, I should be able to see what it does. Civ III did this very well and there's no good reason it shouldn't be in the game. The last part is a minor complaint, but at the very least I should be able to follow what my research leads to as well as what the benefits that it provides actually do.

2. Can I micromanage my planets? I find it patently ludicrous that the sliders only apply to my entire empire. Why can I not have one planet just pump out military units? If I want to hurry a social improvement at one planet (by emphasizing social production in the domestic screen) I can only do so at the expense of research of military production and research IN MY ENTIRE EMPIRE!?!? This is ridiculous.

1. Not yet, but it will be there in an update. I am not sure when, but it will be *free* :)

Check http://webpages.charter.net/trevorpowdrell/

For more info, or http://www.brimstonedragons.net/azakain/

For an updated manual including a nice tech tree

2. No. There is some discussion on the boards about this, but for now, it is not seen as a priority update.

As for number 2, it's not even a possible update. Micromanaging individual planets was deliberately left out in the game design phase and I for one don't want it in the game ever.

There is consideration of a tech or game mechanic to limit the waste of an empty queue, but that is the only thing that has gotten any official nod as a possibility. There is a fair amount of talk from fans about having a per governor set of sliders but that's just talk at this point.

As for #2, having it the way it is makes the game more challanging for one, and more strategic as well. If you could set individual planets to whatever, you could *always* have a couple/few planets doing trade goods or wonders.. a few others giving up their social and military projects to help research get done quicker, and a few planets with the ship improving shipyards, etc. cranking out ships.. and would rather screw up what is a neat feature, imo.

Having to decide empire wide what you are going to focus on gives the game more angles for strats, and doesn't make it easier.. which is good.

ahh, the eternal reality vs gameplay dilemma...
I suggest you suspend your sense of reality for this case for the fun of playing this great game.

Trust me, once you start playing bigger maps in the actual game (not the Tiny one in the demo), you would thankful for the reduced micromanagement.

Well, maybe you're right. But I would rather have it included as an option and then decide whether or not I want to use it.

Once you buy the game and register yourself, u could participate in a fun feature of the Galciv experience called the Metaverse.

U can mouse over most of the medals to see what they are or see here http://www.galciv.com/metaverse/legend.asp

Hover your mouse over the top of each icon, they all have mouseover titles. Except the very right hand one which indicates with two bars that he has played (and submitted) 10-14 games of GalCiv.

If you use a browser and go to the GalCiv home page www.galciv.com , click on 'Metaverse' found in the top row of menu items (not the side bar, the top bar) then in the side bar of the next screen, click on the black button marked 'Legend' and you'll get an explanation of all the icons.

What that legend doesn't show you is what the very left hand icon on many (not all) messages are: Those are the guilds, known in this game as 'Empires' :)
