Question about AI targetting

I hear a lot about micro ff in battles. Sometimes you do, sometimes you don't. Does this mean that ship normally target whatever ship type they will do the most damage to? I'm figuring out how to micro as efficiently as I can. I believe this means letting the AI on my side do as much good as it can. It's problably a newbish question and I'm sure it's in the manual but with S&H the digital download without the box is about 12 bucks cheaper.

The digital download comes with the manual. Check the directory where you installed Sins - I believe manual.pdf is the file name.

...but it doesn't go into detail on AI strategy. Basically, the AI ships attack player ship types that it does the most damage to (e.g. bombers will go after heavy targets, fighters will target enemy bombers), and the AI doesn't use as much focus fire as a human generally does.

Generally, you need micro to beat larger fleets. Taking command of your capital ships and using their powers wisely is absolutely essential.
