Changing names..drives me nuts...help

i have a really dumb question that applies to galactic civ.
the starting character is named something like alan bradley but i cant get rid of the letter Y.....same problem with setting money on the corporate machine. there's always a zero at the end.....can only put _this under the last letter or zero.
so instead of tom.. i'm Tommy.. sort of bugs me..lol
