What options do YOU pick?

Hi there one and all,

After a year of playing M2TW solid, I have finally decided to pull GC2 DA back off the shelf and start playing again.

I did not get too far with out losing interest last time, but I really want to make an effort this time and get to know the game.

What I got bored with was that I wiped the map clean of enemy territories usually too fast (normal difficulty) or I was too advanced for the other nations for them to compete and I never got to build the really cool bigger ships in the game, something that I was disappointed in as that was the reason that I bought the game in the first place.

NOW, my questions to you good folk is the following:

What difficulty do you play your custom games on? (say you were an intermediate type player)

What Map sizes do you usually play with? (including planet regularity)

In the set up menu, Do you use the Advanced Technologies option or use (I think its called- sorry at work) Battle of the Gods option?

Thanks in advance.

to be fair, 'normal' difficulty is just to get you going and understand the game, but once you figured that out, it's not much of a challenge at all. the heart of the game is 'intelligent' i suppose, because it's an even level and full AI capability is used. i mostly play on tiny, small or medium maps, because i don't have too much time on my hands really. i turn off mega events, because even though they're called 'mega' for a reason, i find them a bit too extreme and offputting.

i may pass your question about advanced techs or battle of gods, for i don't know much about it.

1) Try playing on Painful level

2) Map size is a fun thing. If you want to really make it to the endgame techs and ships play a very large map. If you don't want micromanaging of hundreds of planets, turn down the Number of Planets, Number of colonizable Planets, and/or the Number of stars. Simply by turning down number of stars, you obviously turn down possible planets since a planet needs a star.

3) Battle of The Gods makes you play as Terran and can be fun but I use custom races. Fast or Very Fast Tech options might be more to your liking if you want a different race and the ability to use those endgame ships/techs.

4) Disable tech trading can be fun and will make it harder for a human player in my opinion because (at least with me) a human can trade techs with so many other races that the smart human player can easily keep up with the other races even withuot using too much of their resources on techs.

4a) Especially if you have Twilight of the Arnor where each race has its own unique Tech Tree. If you want some serious flavor to your game and more difficulty, turn off tech trading and tech stealing. Now you are forced to use your income for your techs and cant use other races (especially minor races) as a crutch for techs and money. Also, the idea of unique techs per race is important enough to me that I don't want other races having eachothers unique technologies.

My personal favorite settings:

Largest map size but with uncommon stars
Rare anamolies and asteroids
Disable Tech trading/stealing and Mega Events.
Full Enemies and 8 minor races
Victory conditions: Influence/Conquest
