Scouts

I have questions about scouts. They have a firepower (albeit small) but they never seem to fire back when attacked. They just stay there and "show the other cheek" to get pummeled. Is there a way to put them in "aggressive" stance? In case of need if a scout is around it could give a hand in a battle, no?

Also, when they are scouting around, if you forget to babysit them and follow their every move they will just stand there at the edge of the gravity well and get killed, neither fight nor flee. Talk about micromanagement. If you send a scout to an important location, you practically have to follow it constantly and forget about everything else. So, is there a way to make them continue movement without your express orders, or at least retreat when faced with enemies?

Right clicking on the two buttons at the right of the unit interface (Or whatever they call it) should do the trick.
The bottom one would turn on/off auto attack for any ship.
For the scout, the top one turns on/off auto explore, which sends them to any unexplored planets, then to the one you haven't been to longest.

So that's what people mean about steep learning curve!  ;p  They could explain these things better in the manual.

If the default was auto-attack and your scouts charged to their deaths every time they entered a system, would you call that a steep learning curve too?

I'm not complaining that the default is not auto-attack, but that they don't explain these things.
