Achievements

Hi all, just bought the game a few days ago and I'm really liking it so far (despite getting thrashed about every time I go online, but I'm learning).

I'm also trying to get all the achievements unlocked (at about 33% right now), but I wanted to ask what the actual, um, purpose of doing so is. Yes, I've sifted through the search function of this forum and yes, I've looked through the user manual a couple of times, but I found no real mention of it. Do the achievements unlock anything? Do they improve the game somehow?

I've seen mention that the achievements help you 'understand the game better', but sometimes I fail to see how. 'Beat the game while researching everything on the civilian tree, and nothing on the military' is more an exercise in tedium than in strategy (it takes a LONG time to do all those researches, even on fast research speed, and then you have to do it 6 different times to boot). On the other hand, I think the achievements of 'own every capital ship at once' and 'beat the game with nothing but capital ships' in a single game is really quite fun.

Also, I have no idea what this 'star ponies' thing is about, so if someone could clear that up it'd be much appreciated.

Thanks.

space ponys is a joke, dont worry about it.
You can find them by searching a planet, but they arent always there. It seems to be random and to my knowledge no one has figured out the trick.

Achievements dont unlock anything, they are only there to take up space I suppose. I think it'd be cool to have your achievements displayed on an 'ironclad online profile' that would be nice to have. But we dont.

The game rocks, but it has its drawbacks :)

I think the achievements are there so you have something to do. It would get boring after a few days if there was no goal/mission. I've never heard anything about space ponies though. :D

Hi Zwanglos,

The achievements don't really mean much as has been stated. They are kinda cool to try to achieve but you should be aware that every time a new patch comes up they get reset. I was at over 90% at one point, then a new patch came out and well starting over. Anyway as a new player they do give you some goals so just have fun.

@Starrider
Weird. Mine have never reset and I've had SoaSE since it came out. (I'm at about 75%)

I found space ponies. And my first reaction was to check artifacts. XD
No bonuses though; it just paints a pink space pony on the planets pop-up data card.

You can always back up your achievement file.

I've had sins also since it came out (actually pre ordered). Anyway when I upgraded the first time it definetely reset my achievements. When I upgraded to 1.5 I'm not sure since I had install problems and in that case I deleted everything and started from scratch. Still the achievements are just a goal so I just go back thru them I'm currently at about 70%.
