Influence and allies

Perhaps influence should be changed so your allies planets don't defect to you? If I ally with a civ I want to keep them around without having to keep building culture improving starbases for them. Likewise I don't want to help out my ally only to find he now has enough inflence to make my border planets defect to him.

Hmm...or maybe at least make it harder for them to defect to you...suggestion added to my list.

Yikes... culture modules have shared-effect as well? No wonder I never vote for that option :)

Conversely, you can see why a long-time ally might be *more* susceptible to cultural influences. One of my favorite tactics is to ally-up with another empire (often more powerful), then go on a flipping spree :)

Hmph... why isn't there an evil smiley?

I'm not sure this should be changed. Culture isn't a governmental thing after all, its about the citizens of a planet deciding to change empires.

Perhaps you should have the ability to decline the planet joining your empire, but there should still be some penalty for you or the planet(s).

Perhaps you could have an option to choose, at any time, a specific empire against which you gain additional cultural resistance, but doing so would also harm your diplomatic relationship with the empire in question.

I think citizens would be less likely to defect to an allied race. It's not "Let's flee out evil overlords and become part of the Terran Empirem they'll keep us safe" anymore, it's more "Lets revolt and join the Terran Empire, they get on great with our leaders and won't be happy with us for harming their allies empire. In fact, they'll probably give our planet back and we'll be punished for rebeling" which is just silly.

Plus the empire you're allied with is normally your best trading partner, it sucks for their trade capital to defect to you and then both of your are losing 2000bc per turn.

Remember, though, that this is cultural domination, not political domination. It's more like "Thanks to the copious amounts of X-Men 23 datafleks, Soylent Green happy meals and xeno-viagra our government is allowing into our systems, and the fact that even our *leaders* love those pink fleshlings, we're even *more* disposed to just going the whole hog and raising the Terran flag over our colonies."
