The GalCiv User Manual Thread

Here's what I've got so far:

http://www.galciv.com/galciv_manual.pdf

I hope to add more to it, plus I'm working with a GalCiv player with writing background on a future version too.

But this would be a good place to start asking for specific info to be put into the user manual.

ok..
a section that says in bold letters

How to Win or Victory Conditions

lists them all ..and the specifics of the victory
requirements.

for cultural victory..this includes mentioning you must
not be at war or have a treasury below -500 and that
the main menu percentile is how much of the 90 % you have..in other words..that it must be at 100% for you
to have 90%

:D

Why are all the % number for the starting gov types different that what is displayed in the UI (1.0.3A)? Are all these numbers changing in 1.0.4 or is the UI incorrect?

On p. 29, it talks about the "Life Force" resource. Is it coming back ? (as if I had seen it, I've known about galciv for something like 2 weeks :d )

One small thing to add as well (I quickly looked through the manual but did not see it, please ignore this if it's already in). I just discovered how to quickly edit the current project through the planet list (clicking on the bar showing the current advancement of the project) (this would fit nicely in the "planet list" section, with a screenshot).

Are there other interface tricks like that ? I'd love to know.

Err, outdated.

See the all-wrong faction descriptions, for example. They are from the Beta, I think. :D :D

And still no unit table, improvements table,...

Is a data collection in just a few, easy to look at pages really too much to ask? ;p

Good work! Didn't read it all yet, but it looks good. Also nice to put a gameplay example in it!

I did not read your initial post carefully so I started to edit the manual. I see now that you have a writer onboard. I am an editor and would be another pair of eyes to polish this effort if you like. One area of concern would be to insure that the outline (headings) are all consistent. Anyway, let me know.

Do you want us to report errors?

Like the description for option list's "Active Gov. Ignores GNN".

Desparately needs a *real* tech tree. Steal/borrow from previously published ones by GalCivers (IMO).

I would like more information on trade and diplomacy. I'm on my 5th game, and am still having trouble getting a handle on these 2 items.

A bit more information on default settings within the game, e.g. how many people/troops are loaded if the player doesn't adjust the number -- and how is that decided (formula, etc.)?

More information about unsettled planets: what does the physical size of the planet mean (if it means anything); more of the pros and cons of settling PQ14 planets and lower.

Please, please, please print future manuals on white paper and with font sizes above 9 or 10 points. For us over 40 folks who have to use reading glasses, small black print on dark grey paper is a real killer. Also, dark screen shots on dark paper don't help at all. I'd much prefer to see simplified drawings in clear black and white.

Finally, (and I don't know if this can be done - some game sites do it) it would be nice to have a printable version of all the important text information you have on your site (the GalCiv encyclopedia is a good example). Really good stuff and I do sincerely appreciate it...but it's hard to print, at least for me and my equipment.

Thanks very much for a really great game and some wonderful support. I deeply appreciate your interest in your fan base. It's unusual, and very welcome!

End of quote

That's a good one. It seems to offer to launch half full if you manually launch, but if you auto-launch it seems to load the thing up all the way. I'm sure every player has been bitten by that at least once.

As an editor, shouldn't you have used "ensure"? :)
