Yep.  Our very first hurricane as Floridians is coming directly at us.  All reports have it coming right over us.

I'm excited but only because I know it's only a Category 1 and there should be minimal damage hopefully. 

Hurricanes, especially living inland, don't bother me so much but I'm scared out of my mind when I think about tornadoes.  They scare the heck out of me.  They did say, however, we would have tornado warnings, as a result of this hurricane.  So not liking that part. 

What gets me about all this is the fact that people are going to the store in droves to buy water among other supplies..  Maybe it's the Yankee in me....... but buying water?  I mean can't you just turn on the tap fill jugs, fill buckets and fill the bathtub?   That's what I'm planning on doing.  I've got some cleaned out milk jugs I'll fill up and put in the fridge. 

Someone yesterday told me he's not preparing too heavily for this storm only that he bought water for his dog.  For the dog?  Huh?  Sounds like a good job for the bathtub to me. 

The only preparing we are going to do since this isn't a much higher storm is to go around the yard and bring in anything that moves.  So the flowerpots and lawn and lanai furniture will come into the house.  The BBQ grill will be brought into the lanai and that's about it.  We're also going to fill the car and golf cart with gas but that will be about it. 

Then we hunker down, stay home and wait.  A category 1 should be not much more than high winds and rain of which we are in so dire need of.

I enjoy storms so long as nothing bad happens!  It's pouring rain and thundering here today, and I am loving it!

In Hawaii hurricanes were always a concern, but we were such a small speck in the middle of the giant Pacific that it was easy for a hurricane to miss us (the Hawaiian islands are the most remote island chain in the world, btw!).

I am catching some of it before you do KFC as Tropical Storm Fay is starting to role by me as I write this. It has been raining non stop here and we don't even know if the kids will have school tomorrow or not. My office will not close unless there is a Hurricane warning, which may be possible since they believe it could still become a hurricane before it hits Florida again within the next couple of days. I hope it doesn't, like TW I enjoy storms so long as nothing bad happens.

Welcome to Florida! You got to pay for all that sunshine SOMETIME. ;)

Hurricanes are notorious for spawning tornados. So even a Cat 1 is something to be respected. Living inland, we have never had more than that in my life time (we had a 3 when I lived down in tidewater - about 40+ years ago!). But they do snap tree limbs and the tornados can do worse!

Hunker down, stock up on lots of fresh water and make sure your generator is working. And good luck!

We are closed tomorrow here.  It's supposed to hit us at 2pm tomorrow!  It was raining earlier but it's dry now.

Well I guess it's going to hit us sometime tomorrow night.  Right now they're watching it saying it may gather up some speed before it hits here.  Wait and see. 

I'm staying home tomorrow since I don't have to go out. 

Got the water bottled up today, brought in the lawn furniture and potted plants and stuff and swept around the deck area which needs a good washing anyhow.  No generator tho.  So hopefully we won't lose any power.  If we do, got my candles and flashlights. 

I'll update tomorrow after it hits.  Maybe Charles, FS and I can compare notes....LOL.

I think the reason people buy water is because they don't know how long the water may be off.

It could be a few hours, few days, or a few weeks.  Just about the time you plan on something small, the really big things comes.

I know this is totally sacrelige, but I would love to experience a *weak* hurricane.  And a tornado, from a distance, of course.  I've always been fascinated by the weather, and unfortunately, in our part of the country, we don't get much.  It rained here on Saturday, and we're coming into "monsoon" season (where we get about an inch of rain in the fall and in the spring).  Hopefully that won't mean too many indoor recesses for the kiddos when school starts.

Actually more than that. We never lost water with isabel, but the supply was tainted (read poopy water) for several days after the event.

Yup! There is no doubt that the experience of tropical storms, hurricaines, high winds and lots of rain all at once will come with living in the Sunshine State!

It sounds like you've done a good job preparing. Stay tuned in to the local civil authorities and they'll keep you informed.

I have experienced both Hurricanes and Tornadoes up close and personal and let me tell you with all the turning involved I an definitely not turned on by close encounters with them. I enjoy the rain and mild wind from Tropical Storms, but even a category 1 hurricane and a tornado can make me hide under anything.

But I will say this, I would take a Hurricane anytime as oppose to Earthquakes, Tornadoes, Snow Storms and Tsunamis.

I lived in Florida for 20 years and every hurricane, not having a basement, we hunkered down with pillows all around us in the bathroom playing cards and board games.

Well the wind has picked up substantially this afternoon.  I went to Walgreens and Publix in my golf cart at lunchtime.  On the way home, I swear I felt like my cart was going to tip over.  Going up the big hill which is open all around with no trees or houses the wind was pushing against me as I was going up.   I was praying the whole time to stay upright especially as I went by a huge construction site with about 70 men watching me go by. 

So now I'm wondering if we'll get reports in the news later about golf carts tipping over.  There's no way I'm going back out there until the storm is over. 

So far tho, I believe this is only listed as a tropical storm but the wind gusts are unbelievable already so I can only imagine what it would be like for a larger Hurricane.

Pshaw! Earthquakes are for sissies and Snow storms are lovely! You may have a case for the other 2, but I prefer Earthquakes and snow storms over the others any day!

This is true, and also as Doc says, the quality of the water will be questionable for a while after a bad storm or hurricane!  We had a week without good water and electric a couple of years ago!

I'm glad everyone is still safe and ok.

 

We had an earthquake in Hawaii when I was pregnant with Isabella.  It was on the Big Island, but we did feel it on Oahu.  No real damage on Oahu, but we were without power and things were nutty for a day or so.  I have a t-shirt from it, LOL.

Fay was pretty much a flop over here on the west coast of beautiful, sunny FL. Not that I'm complaining or anything... :)

Rode out Charley when he came thru and, trust me, the nonsense the gov't tries to pass out that he was only a cat 4 is nonsense. Been up close and personal when several tornados when I was up North. Up close and personal meaning within a few 100 ft.

And, as far as snow storms, the White Tornado back in '77 was lots of fun - sustained winds of +70, temps waay below zero, and blizzard conditions. A bit over 6' of snow in 3 days. Lowest barometric pressure recorded. Fun, fun, fun...

yeah, we were saying last night....."Fay Fizzled" or "Fay was a Flop" because while we did get some wind and a tad of rain, it wasn't really too much out of the ordinary.  The only thing I'd say was a bit off was the fact it's been grayer than usual these last few days.  Lots of overcast here still.
