not sure if i should get the game and sign up for the beta

From everything we'v seen, the beta looks polished but, for personal reasons, I really cant spend more than 200$ on games, and I already have Spore and Fallout 3 preordered, and i really dont want to preorder this untill i'm SURE I want it (never played DotA so, I really dont know if i like the concept even )
Well, maybe you should wait until the first beta reports (and videos) are coming, because it is very hard for us to tell whether you will like it or not.
You have plenty of time because this game will be out in Feb 2009 at the best so it won't hurt your Christmass 2008 budget.
I agree with Gabberkooij, take a look at the feedback from the first phase of the Beta, and if you like what you see, preorder before the second stage of the Beta and you should get into that 
Especially since the first beta is not about being "fun" or polished from a "gee this is a fun game" standpoint, but more to get feedback on performance compatibility. At least from all that's been said.
I'd wait until at least the next beta. Hell, since this won't even be out until some time in 2009, you could just wait for your next year
