When I was a kid ADD didn't exist as a diagnosable problem. Those kids were the Dreamers. Now they are considered defective in the eyes of society. Probably due to someone wanting to sell a drug somewhere.....

Drugging more children will only continue to feed a general lack in creativity that is rampant in the Movie Studios, music, etc.  These politcally correct remakes of all the old good stuff is killing me.

Music , literature, ..everything is dulled by the drugs that kids are given.

I think it's kind of ironic that the drugs that are illegal in most countries are the drugs that would benefit all our entertainment needs in the long run.  o_O

;P

Damn good point NT.

Hell, if they had half the drugs back then that they have for "problem" children now, I would've been forced to consume more drugs than I could count. ;P   Hell all it takes is to act like a jackass a bit and they want to give you all kinds of crap. It's called being a kid. Some will outgrow it, others won't until they get older and get their ass kicked for it and learn a lesson, others  never will.

Parents can't discipline kids.  Schools can't discipline kids.  The law no makes very little distinction between punishment and abuse.  So parents put their kids on Ritalin to keep them calm.  As with most things like this I blame it on the lawmakers that bow to the pressure from the few to the dismay of the many.

My kids get disciplined.  They get out of line in my house, I put them right back in.  And I'll be damned if anyone is going to tell me how to raise them.  My kids, my rules.  There is a big, BIG difference between discipline and abuse.  The folks that see it as the same are the brats that didn't get disciplined as children, and you can take that to the bank.  I'm not saying that children aren't abused, but there is a difference.  Anyone wants to chew the fat about that, I'm here.

You hit the nail on the head there Zubaz.  I'm so tired of parents or non-parents (like they can even have a say) speaking up about spanking and such.  Kids step out of line, they'll get right back in with a well placed swat.  Think about your grandparents for a moment.  Do you believe your grandfather/grandmother acted like some of these out of control kids when they were little.  No way, no how.  They towed the line.  My kids tow the line, most of the time.  Kids are kids and will get a little crazy.  Parents need to know the difference between being kids and being brats and then take care of it.  Golly, I get angry just thinking about this topic.

To go even more off topic . . .

In addition to discipline kids need freedom.  I am hammering away at everyone who will listen about giving our kids more time to be kids  and teh freedom to do so.

I am limiting the ammount of homework my kids will do a day.  10 minutes per grade per year.  So my 3rd grader will only do 30 minutes of homework.  (Unless she is abusing the rule and then I drop a hammer.  That way she has time to play.  (www.stophomework.com)

I am working on my wife and our friends to let our kids have more random fun.  (http://freerangekids.wordpress.com/)

I am trying to get the local school to get kids to walk to school!  Get off your ass and walk!  Lose some weight!  Stop having yoru parents protect you from the home to the school! (http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/kidswalk/)

Baby steps maybe but more than the next dad is doing around here.

I like the homework idea zubaz.  I might talk to the wife about that.  I'm a firm believer in the freerange kids.  You have to give them some leeway.  I went home this past weekend and other than mine and my cousins kids, I didn't see a one, not a one, out anywhere.  Nobody.  We climbed all over those hills/woods/cricks when I was young.  Now, nobody.  Parents need to sack up and tell their kids to get the hell out from in front of the video game.  Punks.

Boy this sure did stray a bit away from the OP eh. *_*

I would have to agree with you though, messiah and Zubaz, on the whole discipline(lack thereof)/abuse topic.

As for the free range kids thing I agree it is a great idea but that's another thing where parents can't be lazy. If you're going to allow/ encourage it, which really is a good thing, then make sure you meet that happy medium between giving them their freedom and  being to lax and letting them do whatever they want without caring. People need to learn how to drill the right things into their kids heads without being to overbearing/overprotective.

If you don't and you take the combination of them not knowing the proper things and add to that the number of people out there who just don't give a shit about anyone but themselves you can have disastrous consequences to live with.

A quick example of why I say that about people not caring is a local news story I read here recently (which reminded me why I only read a newspaper about once a year anymore), I won't go into all the details of the events leading up to it because it's just to aggravating, but there was a traffic jam on one of the busiest roads around here, 45mph limits and heavy traffic, after sitting there moving slowly behind the line of cars ahead of them for awhile, two different drivers got to where they could see what was causing the problem and both of them ended up getting out of their cars to go after  a very young girl (2 or 3 yrs old i think) who was walking in the middle of the road with all of these other cars honking their horns at her and driving around her.  Just one more example of how ridiculously self involved people have gotten these days.

Anyways, back on topic, free range is great but make sure you teach your kids the things they need to know, and not just teach it to them but check up on them once in awhile when they don't think you are around to make sure they are still following the things you have taught them.

Not long got back from thee docs and he's trialing me on a new drug for ED.  It's called Tryagara.... he said it mighn't help alot but it wouldn't stop me from trying.

Apparently, they're working on a new drug that treats ED and dementia together - seeing as one often accompanies the another - it's going to be called cereberect, which is a bit of a mouthful so I imagine it'll get condensed to dick-head.

;P
