Do we need tournaments?

Do we need tournaments?

Just a save of 1st turn - then everyone will be on the same starting conditions. Better if it will be official.

If someone likes competition - say yes!

Ironman = 'Do or die' (perhaps from Warlords: Battlecry 2?)

I call it 'Hardcore' - if you are quitting current game session you must save, if you are loading game, you must load a last save.

To Alzandrion

No, allowance of save/loads can't be balanced because you can save/load 10 times or 100 or 1000.

If everyone loads same save of the 1st turn of the game, then all will have same starting conditions.

I think it's a great idea. Another fun thing is succession games (you pass a game along).
I have internet access problems from home so can't participate right now, but still it is a good thing to do.
As for ranking/suggestions, I think the most interesting 'competition', if you want to indulge in it, is fastest win.
I never thought of saving/reloading... and miss the point of limiting starbases.
The things to do would be to decide of a map size and difficulty settings.

lol take out the dashes bte seriously how soon then could we do this i think waiting for 1.04 is good cause then depending on how much is changed everyone will have to have a new origanl startigy. Oh and will Mods Be allowed? i dont meen super moding were final frounteir is a starting tech that costs 1bc but just some mods.

LDiCesare:

oh i have played those pass along games with civ 3 kinda what we did was we all had a copy of of that game and then all 30 of us would vote on what to do for every turn we called it a democracy game. The only problem was the AI didn't always react the same way so about half way through we gave up. But yea the pass along idea is great too have many turns would each person get i would have to say at least 10-20 or it would take to long.

I made a small website in half an hour. It's not much, but could be a start. Visit it here:

http://galciv.reallyrules.com

It includes the 'first game of the month' :CONGRAT:

I also made a new Topic here:

http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GF&ID=59314

Maybe we can continue our discussion there.....

And the first website is just a start to get things going. If someone can do a better job: be my guest!

[ellestar: thanks for your explanation]

Ditto...what's an ironman feature?

I forgot about those possible future cheats...

I think the best way to have tourneys is to upload a galaxy from this website to keep it fair and even.

Then what...do you play until you win or get a deadline for your score to be recorded? Some people have more time to play than others.

This is a great idea. And I hope that Stardock will support it by modifying the metaverse. I'll bite...I've downloaded the game, and I'm gonna beat all of ya... :D

AFAIK game loads information from data files at the start, so you can play safely, game will be w/o mods.

And how to upload a game?

--------------

I thought it will be better to start a competition in friday and end it in monday. I don't really think that anyone needs more time to win on medium.

--------------

I suggest that a score means nothing, so IMHO better to calculate 'score' in the following way:

Everyone uploads a save of a last turn, so that you need just press 'turn' button and you'll get victory (or defeat) screen. Only one victory save per player. No 'just press end turn 10 times' saves.

Everyone get temporary score of
1) Cultural victory - Number of turns to victory*Military Score (in statistics screen)
2) Alliance victory - Number of turns to victory/Numer of major races in game
3) Tech Victory - Number of turns to victory/(Number of techs researched by you / Total number of techs (in statistics screen))
4) Military victory - Number of turns to victory

Then lowest temorary score in each category is the best, this player gets a score of 100.
Every other player's score in this category will be equal to 100*(lowest temporary score)/(player's temporary score)

So, we'll have different rankings in each category.

-------------------

Also, i thought that it will be good if we disable at least some some events - say, draginol.

Also, starting picks are... strange for me. But it's may be even better.

For now we can upload to Apolyton.net forums.

Hm maybe better to say 'Number of turns to win' instead of 'Number of turns to victory'.

"What's an ironman feature?"

Essentially it means a "no save/reload" option.

With this option on, you load a saved game, it vanishes and can“t be loaded again. Also, no Autosave. Great for the truly competitive; of course, with a CTD you are screwed LOL (the only disadvantage).

Ichimaru:

How to take a screenshot:

- press prt scrn
- open paint (or any other drawing program)
- Press Ctrl-V (or 'paste').
- You can resize the picture (if you want). I used a 800*600 size for the larger picture and a 200*150 for the smaller pictures.
- Save the picture as a .jpg of .gif

----
Playing the game:

- Open the .zip file
- Extract both the GOTM...blabla.sav file and the Directory to your Galactic Civilizations\Data\SaveGames\ directory.

----
Ellestar:

"And how to upload a game?"

Well... I actually didn't think about that part yet ;p . How do these Apolyton.net forums work?

And about the scoring system: We should really think about how we will be scoring the different wins. Number of turns to victory would be cool. But I am even more interested in stories of people getting creamed by the AI!

----
I am one of those people who don't have that much time, so if there are people:
- good at creating websites (for our website. I don't have time to keep it up to date)
- good at modding (to create 'games of the month/ week' and to verify games from players)
- are fanatical galciv players (to invent the scoring system)
- who want to get involved (think about the rules, check savegames, write some stuff, offer help etc.)

We could use you! So if you want to do something; just drop a line in this forum. And if you only want to play: download the game and kick some butt!

I also hope people have some suggestions for upcoming games. We could have some games like: destroy the drengin in the least number of turns (some sort of scenario thingie)

----
Oh yes and by the way: I hope you people don't mind that i started off a little enthousiastic (I kinda hijacked this thread). If you don't like my ideas, just throw them in a litter box ;)

Ok what do we need to do next:

- think of a good scoring method
- think of some medals etc. you can win. I would really also have some medals for: quickest loser, person being most sucked by random events etc. :D
- think of a way we can upload games (for checks)
- update our website and maybe have some sort of bulletin board for our website
- have a crew of people for specific tasks

Ellestar: since you started this idea. I would suggest you as being our 'coordinator' and CEO. What about that :CONGRAT: ;)

I will help out whenever you need me, but as I already mentioned I am kinda short on time.
I'm quickest loser i bet less than 6 years lol i am already done how do you upload it aplsomthing.net?

i can do all of this but the web site cause even though i can program html and make cool looking stuff i cant get it off my computer for some resion but if some good web designer wants to team up with me i will do alot of the work

I think the "ironman" feature means no saving allowed.

But I think it would be essential to any endeavor of this sort!

Now that I know what the "ironman" feature is...I like the idea. Tourneys should have a different feel than my long term game anyway. The lack of save/load will definitely get me up outta bed on a Saturday morning and make me work for that high score.
