Totally frustrated

New software... not so much

I have become completely frustrated with 1) multiplicity and 2) Virtual desktops. These are the only two Items I am currently interested in as they are productivity tools. I really do not care how cool my PC looks as “cool” earns no money for me. I am into productivity and the above mentioned tools are supposed to increase my productivity, however they have done just to opposite.

1)      Multiplicity: I have owned this tool for a real long time. I have used it to access multiple computers from a single desktop which provides a better working environment as it reduces the number of mice and keyboards I need to access. However, when I re-imaged all of my new machines, installed multiplicity on each and configured them… nothing. I agree that I can get varying degrees of nothing such as able to connect to client (secondary) computer—but unable to get the mouse to go there. I have tried every permutation of Primary/Secondary, ports, passwords, restricted to subnets and just about every other configuration the software. The end result is I am unable to control multiple Vista machines.

2)      Virtual desktop: Well the good sided is that this software installs and provides virtual desktops. The downside is that the windows have no idea which desktop they were started on and should be glued to. I have used the lock to the ”N” desktop which works in a manner but windows still need to be “snapped” back when they start appearing on all of the desktops. In UN*X this multiple desktop is not magic, it has worked for years and I was in when X was very young. Windows has incredible API for desktops and I for the life of me cannot understand why the software has so many issues with window ownership.

I purchased the ObjectDesktop as a way to get two of the products I was interested in, in the end the only ones that seem to work are the skinning ones and they even cause IE to die. Is there a representative from StarDock/ThinkDesk who knows these products in the fourm?

Sorry to hear you're having trouble with this.  With Multiplicity the best thing to do is e-mail [email protected] .  There are several things we'll have to check for that that are machine specific, that you probably don't want posted in the forums.  As far as Virtual Desktops is concerned, are you using this on a Vista machine (you mentioned you were using Vista machines with Multiplicity)?  Virtual Desktops is for Windows 2000/XP/Server 2003 and hasn't been tested on Windows Vista.
