Sorry, but I ain't happy - Endless Universe

Just bought GalCiv Endless universe only to find that despite being described:

"Endless Universe builds on the epic story, following on from Dark Avatar and Twilight of the Arnor..."

that it's actually just those two expansion packs as a standalone product. Don't throw 'you should have read a review' at me, that description is badly misleading and I feel robbed.

The posts that explain this are buried. Please put a clear statement of fact about what this game actually is in a sticky or news item please, because I can see a lot of people doing the same thing I did.

Rant over...going to see if anyone I know wants this game...

Well, if you live in Germany I might be interested. I haven´t played the expansions yet and for that reason I was thinking buying the game. On the other hand: Can´t you simply return it?

I agree, it is misleading, and AFAIK we pointed that out to Kalypso (the publisher for Europe who made and sells that bundle) when they first put out press releases saying that prior to GC2EU's release. It is indeed just a standalone bundle to make the expansions available to those in Europe without access to credit cards supported in Impulse (and in non-English languages).

Did Kalypso run with that line on the box anyway or something, or where did you see it?

The standards of internet speed went up really fast since a few years ago. I have a 1500 Mbps connection and people call it slow :annoyed:

Not that im complaining at all because i took the time to check what it was before buying it, but...

Quote from back of Jewel Case:

"GC2:EU is a comprehensive standalone expansion pack for the best-selling and award-winning space strategy game.

EU builds on the epic story, following on from DA and ToA - Two Expansion packs which have never before been released in European retail. New Challenging and comprehensive campaigns and units, as well as an improved visual appearance will give you the ultimate experience of conquering the universe!

EU is a stand alone product!
The full version is not requried to play!

  • 2 new and challenging campaigns
  • New maps, units and scenarios
  • Enhanced graphics and new soundtrack
  • Alternative map sizes and victory tasks
  • Comprehensive Editors:
    Maps
    Scenarios
    Planetary Environments
    Tech Tree

And many more enhancements!"

Thats pretty much it. Hope it helps

I think you're mistaken about your connection speed.  Even T3 internet connections only run about 45 Mbps.

1500 Mb/s would be sitting directly on top of a majour backbone, where the limits would be your local network adapter (common is up to 1000 Mb/s).

I think the wording is poorly chosen on the jewel case. However, you never should believe the hype the marketing department prints on those anway. Usually the more enthusiastic the text, the worse the game actually plays. In this case: Marketing couldn't print 'It's the two expansion packs that you were able to buy digitally anyway', so they had to come up with something that makes it look like there is an advantage of purchasing EU over the digital bundle.

Intentionally misleading, I'd say, but par for the course when it comes to marketing speech. You'll hate me - but really, really read reviews or browse the forums a bit for bugs / technical problems before buying ANY game today.

I agree that marketing has to look good, but I believe the wording is not within the bounds of 'poor wording' and it closer to 'lie'. I bought the game without reading reviews because I felt I could trust the stardock logo, having never disliked one of their games. Guess I'll go back to always checking from now on.

In any case, I made a friend happy with a free game :)

End of Idunyken's quote

'Poor wording' is marketing speak for 'blatant lie'. :P

I, too, trust Stardock - but in this case Stardock wasn't the publisher, it was Kalypso. So if you're going to mistrust someone in the future, mistrust Kalypso.

As I´m considering buying it - so it is basically a stand-alone version of the two expansions, right?

Is anything missing from the "core" game? If something is missing: can I install EU on top of GCII? Or is everything released until now included?

Thanks in advance :) !

It doesn't have the base DL exe or campaign. But outside of the campaign, you should not see any difference within DA/TA themselves.

AFAIK it will install in addition to any existing GC2, not on top.

Well, unrelated to anything else, let me just voice the opinion that i am very glad that EU is a European release of expansions that I have.  For a moment there, I thought SD went and released a whole expansion pack and no one told me.  Phweew!
