Does AI ever build star bases on non-resource locations?

Never happened to me. AI seems to be building star bases on resource points only. I mean, star bases give you a massive advantage even without a resource under them. Why AI doesnt realise that?

PS:I am playing in intelligent level and its my 6th or 7th game.

I've never seen the AI build a non-resource based starbase. I only build on reasources if they are in my sector or a sector I plan to control very soon :)

BTW I like the way AI responds when you build a star base in his territory:

AI:'Eh, you star base in sector x,y doesnt seem to be mining resources, but instead its gaining great offensive capability'

Response: 'Dont worry about it'

(or something alone those lines. When this message came up I was actually planning to start my massive and long planned invasion exactly the next turn using those star bases so responding with 'dont worry about it' was very very funny)

I've seen the AI build a starbase where there are no resources. The Yor collective had a starbase without any resources in one of its own sectors, built, I think, around the time they went to war against the Drengin. It only took a battle hammer to destroy it, though. :) This was with all the AIs set to beginner.

it happens on intelligent. i think only one of the possible AI "personalities" ever does it, though. i had the drengins build starbases all over the place. somewhat haphazardly i might add. they did add some attack/defense/manufacturing bonuses on to some of them. but never to any really serious degree.

cheers

Its nice to hear that AI does build SB on non-res points. However its sad that I never witnessed it. Maybe my games dont last long enough???

It would be nice if AI was REALLY aggressive with building SB (not necessarily 2-3 per sector but at least one decent SB per sector where his planets are).

Also AI should be able to build SB in your sector, which is smth I have never ever seen happen.

Heck, I didn't even realize you COULD build starbases anywhere but on resources until yesterday. ;) I found out after purchasing a starbase from a neighbouring empire. The next turn they built another starbase RIGHT beside the one I just bought. I was annoyed at first... then delighted when I realized I could do the same. :D

Question: do all four squares around a resource benefit from said resource if you build a starbase in each one?

I've seen the Torians do it as well in a contested (through warfare) sector. They already had a starbase in that sector on a resource, but wanted more of a bonus to combat, apparently.

You mean do all eight squares around a resource benefit from that resource? I dont think so...but you can always check by clicking on SB that was built directly next to yours and see if they get the benefits of that resource.. :)

Right. Eight squares. I can't handle simple 2d calculations in my head when the game is not in front of me, lol.

Anyway, I asked because when a starbase is around a resource, the resource sort of shifts and appears to be on multiple squares at once.

Ok...whew. Thanks for the reply, anyway :P
