Where did you first hear about Sins?

I don't know why, but I am currious. Where did you first hear about Sins of a Solar Empire...

I first read about it from Penny Arcade. Tycho wrote, and I quote

"I Installed Sins of a Solar Empire on the Night Engine yesterday, to see if it would be something we'd consider advertising. Uh... yes. Yes. Yes a thousand times over. This is why it's nice to work with a smaller company, because if they want to advertise something on your site, they're not pulling from some budget a year in advance of the game's release. Stardock sent a full, boxed retail copy of the title and asked if we'd be willing to promote that, as opposed to some theoretical game they might be making in the future. I'll talk more about it on Friday, but I am kind of bowled over by this thing. That someone would pay me to recommend a game as entertaining as Sins of a Solar Empire is really the most ridiculous kind of crap."

After that, I looked into it quickly, and bought it an hour later. Am so glad they gave PA a copy, and that I found out about it.

Anyone else?

I first heard about it when the very first news bits and old old screenshots were released to some of the gaming sites. I think it was Gamespot that I first saw it on. I was quite addicted to World of Warcraft at the time so while the game intrigued me (I'm a huge space game nut), it didn't really jump to the top of the list. In fact, I even missed the first two beta phases. Thankfully, I found some of Multianna's Beta 1 and Beta 2 gameplay videos, and before I finished watching the first one I had the game pre-ordered and waiting for Beta 3 to start - this was around mid-August '07. I finally got my hands on the beta in mid-September, and been hooked ever since.

I read about it on PC Gamer, which interested me in the game. I have been loving the game ever since i read about it.

I saw a mention of it in the GalCiv2 forums at about the time of the announcement, and almost dismissed it except for it being published by Stardock. This was back before even the betas were announced, and the old site layout, and only a dozen forum members (including myself, though didn't really post much as it was before beta's announcement).

It more or less happened the same way for me. I got myself GALCIV II and one day in the forum they announces Sins. I checked the previews and liked it. Very soon after that, I preordered SINS...

I had bought a copy of GalCiv2 after a few friends gave it rave reviews.  I played it for a few days and quickly bought the two expansions through Impulse.  (This was maybe 2-3 months ago).  I never really paid much attention to Stardocks other games, as I was way too hooked on GalCiv2.

Then one day I'm just browsing a game store to kill time and see a box sitting on a shelf with this really cool name.  I pick it up and start looking at it and I see Stardock's logo on it.  I didn't buy it on the spot, but after doing some reasearch that night and reading the reviews and seeing the screenshots, I made my next purchase through Impulse that night.  Wow...what a game!

I had heard a small mention of it when that other horrible Homeworld clone had not long been released (Genesis Rising?) as a link on Gamespot.  It was early days at the time but I never get excited much about games before release so forgot about it.

Some time later I was surfing youtube and clicked a link from some Battlestar Galactica stuff to the homeworld mod all the way to info about Sins.  It was clear I had to get the game, what sold it the most was the ability to send fleets in combat and not actually have to tell which ship to attack what, Large scale Real Time Strategy with "Auto Resolve"?!  Crazy! :)

Being a Homeworld fan, RelicNews Forums. The thread is still there, its got a bit negative start, but in the end (nearly) everyone started loving it :)

I saw it on gamespot while looking for a new RTS or Simulation game, and downloaded the demo. The next day went to the store and bought. Having bought numerous games only to be disappointed, the demo was key in the factor to buy for me. Reviews just never do it for me, they put the game on the radar, but I need to hands on before I fork over my 50$ anymore. I told my 3 gaming friends and we all have and play it now.

I just bought my first gaming computer in 7 years back this July.  I didn't have any games and I had fond memories of imperium galactica 2 and master of orion and star control I and II and I wanted something similar.  I looked up 4x games on wikipedia and came across solar empire and I bought it that day and I haven't gone back.  It had great scores and i bought it no questions asked and it delivered.

The music, the depth, the scenery all combine to make a solid game that I can play for hours at a time.

It was PC Gamer for me, and after playing FPS's for five years, I wanted something more... and I got it!  Excellent software.

 Thanks Stardock.

I think I read about it in an article in CPU, the author had played Master of Orion, which I had tried to play. I have played Homeworld, never was very good at it. I liked Master of Orion, and I am always willing to develope my skills further at everything, so I decided to buy Sins. Sins is a good compromise between Mater of Orion and Homeworld. I have only played Sins about 5 times now, very difficult game, but I enjoy it tremendously and will continue to play.

I found out about it at the best time-at Target with a fifty dollar gift card. I read the box, thought it was awesome, and bought it.

Stardock, you are awesome. Now i'll buy Gal Civ Deluxe Edition

I actually saw it previewed in GameInformer (as I'm a subscriber).  It had been released for only a couple of weeks at this point.  I work at an IT company (i'm a web application based programmer) and talked to a couple of the networking guys that are big gamers.  They already had the game and had played it a few times and loved it.  So, I stopped by Best Buy (directly across the street from work) that night when I left work and have been playing it like crazy ever since.  They are about 10 guys from my company that all have big gaming rigs and we play many games religously.  Sins is now one of them.  Once a month we have a game night at work.  We close down the office a little early, have dinner brought (courtesy of the company), eat real quick, and then game till around 1 or 2 in the morning.  Good times, man...good times.

Games we play mostly are DoW, CoD4, CoH, SoaSE, and sometimes we even go old school and play some Stronghold 2 (am I bringing back any memories yet)?

Haven't played any online games outside of my immediate friends, but plan on trying some general ICO games soon.  I also plan to get GalCivII from Impulse as a Christmas present.

As strange as this sounds I first heard about it from OXM (Official Xbox Magazine). Their sister magazine is PC Gamer and I guess PC Gamer loved it and their editiors couldn't stop talking about it so the OXM editors gave it a try. They loved it so much they decided to mention it in their magazine as well! I thought it sounded interesting so I looked up the website online and started reading up on it. Then I saw a Review of it in Game Informer that was really positive as well. At that point I had heard good things about it everywhere I looked so I decided to pick up a copy. Trying to get some of my friends into it, but they're not really into RTS games and not many are PC Gamers. Hopefully I'll change their minds over winter break when I show it off to a few of them.

PLayed no ther game than GW (Guild Wars) for 3 years, got sick and tired of it, went on jeuxvideo.com (french website) and clicked top 10 games of 2008! Sins was in 'em and I bought it the day I landed back in Canada after 10 years in Europe (Belgium)!!!

Never looked down at this INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL game!

IGN. I don't know why but I didn't hear about it until a few months before release. Usually I'm on top of stuff like this!

Saw it in a store, looked at the back, thought it looked good and bought it along with a few other games. xP

Heh, me too - saw it mentioned on Stardock site shortly before release. Had played Galciv2 for a few weeks/months, and Stardock really had made a good name with this no copyprotection policy. So Stardock is the reason I got it... while the initial reviews were very good, there was no special indication why this game would be especially original and interesting. Now however they offered a discount and I haven't picked up anything else, so I bought it a week ago.

Since the beta under the username of Lock_Eye unfortunately I forgot to write down my password, but I wrote down the serial number for the game. Just created this new account since getting back into the game.

A lot has changed since release.
