Love ARPG, Not a fan of RTS. Would I like Demigod?

Love the Diablo series, love Titan quest, never tried Dungeon Siege, but I've heard good things (at least as far as the sequel is concerned). It's pretty easy to keep me happy playing an ARPG; Make the gameplay fast, make me feel epic, give me unique classes, custom "builds", and give me replayability through character advacement (level, skills, or gear). From what I've read Demigod offers all these things.

But the game is billed as a ARPG/RTS hybrid, but I'm really not a fan of the RTS genre. Granted I haven't played an RTS since the days of WC2, Age of Empires, and early versions of Command and Conquer, but erecting buildings and emassing a giant army to steamroll my opponent's base was never that fun for me. It really comes down to me not enjoying real-time micromanagement of numerous units and structures. I also prefer cooperative play with other humans, not PvP competition. I'd rather experiment with my own character build and join other people to kill scripted boss than fight against human opponents where optimum stragety and perfect reaction time win the match.

Basically, what's the point of this game? What is your goal? Work your way through a linear storyline, gradually growing in power, cooperating with other players? Or is it basically an RTS PVP game where your character improves, but the basic premise of the game is the same- kill other people in a match format? It sounds like a RTS where your hero can level, create a build, add gear, etc, but for all the

I think I understand how the characters differ in ARPG vs. RTS gameplay style but I really don't have any idea what this game is about. Sorry, haven't played DoTa, and only played the first couple missions of WC3 many years ago. The game sounds more like an RTS with ARPG elements because although you're improving your character like an ARPG, the replayability comes from fighting other people online (RTS), not working your way through a co-op campaign (ARPG).

From what you've described, I'd say yes and no.  Yes, because Stardock is putting in a single player campaign where you build you character.  No, because in the end, it still feels like an rts but you control a single hero (unless you're a general - no one outside of stardock has tried those classes yet)

You mentioned you have played dota.  I'd highly recommend you try it out. If you don't want to shell out cash for wc3+frozen throne, you can always use hamachi instead of b.net }:)

However, you're pretty clear that the kind of game you want to play is like diablo.  This is really nothing like diablo.  So if diablo-clone is really what you're looking for, I'd recommend sacred 2 - I hear that's the best one out right now.

I would say Demigod isn't really what you are looking for. There is no "campaign" but a single player type missions. The basic gameplay for Demigod is you choose a Demigod and then put into a battlefield against another Demigod.You and your opponent each have portals that produce out monsters (units) that are AI controlled. You gain levels by killing units that are controled by the AI. Which lets you select skills and spells etc. By killing units and capturing certian structures on the map you gain money, which you can use to buy items for you Demigod. Your goal in the game is to destory opponent's Stronghold. After the match is over its a clean slate, basicly you don't keep that Demigod you used for the next match.

You don't building anything or control any other units if you play an assassin type Demigod. If you choose a general type Demigod you can summon units that you control.

I haven't played yet still waiting for beta 2 so i could be wrong about some things. I am pretty positive that i got most of the information right. If i'm wrong i am sure someone will correct me.

Setcamper, have you ever played a tower defense game?  This is like two-sided tower defense, because you have two sets of ai-controlled creeps moving in opposition toward their enemy's stronghold.  All things being equal, the two creep rivers meet at the center of the map and kill each other, cancelling out like so:

o -------> <------- o

There are allied and enemy towers acting as defense across the map, but unlike a tower D game, the players don't place or control the towers.   Instead the players control vastly powerful mobile units called Demigods.  Demigods are alot like your main character in Diablo, they can level, select builds and skills, buy items, and cast spells.  Half of the Demis (Generals) also control their own minions.  The other half are called Assassins, and excel at fighting as individuals.

The goal is to move the flow of your creep river closer and closer to your enemy's stronghold until you overwhelm it, like so:

o -----------------> < o

You do this by killing enemy creeps and demigods and destroying the defending towers.

The game is similar to RTS in that you are playing within a specific map, and can chose to control minions as a General.  It's similar to an ARPG in that your main focus is a character who you are constantly upgrading and speccing and buying pretty weapons and armor.

I hope this gives you the flavor of the game.

You say you don't like :

PVP is the main part, so you may not like that although there is a singleplayer campaign sort of thing.

I'm feeling you don't mind RTS, but don't like the compittion that's so big in RTS's?

But the thing you describe you don't like in RTS's are absent in Demigod, I think you would like it.

Kestrel's given a good background of the basic gameplay.  I would add that you gain power and direct creepflow by killing your opponents and destroying buildings.  You do level-up your hero with custom skill trees (think of each hero as a class), and while you don't collect/find uber items, you do have the option of choosing from several for each item slot and customizing your hero that way.  Character building is one of the things I enjoy most about Diablo-style games, so I love DotA and see a lot of potential in the Demigod beta.   As lifekatana notes, construction and micromanagement of various units isn't part of the game, so you might enjoy this quite a bit more than an RTS.
