How to change alignment?

This is not as stupid a question as it sounds
I am having a problem in my current game. Early on, when making the initial rush for colonies, I chose one evil path for one of the random events. Very early on, however, it seemed as though the Altarians were going to be the most powerful civ, so I began choosing the good stuff. However, my alignment never got back above 50. In fact, I started watching it, and the last three good paths that I chose only raised my alignment by 1 point!!! I didn't check at the time, but the evil event I chose had to have decreased my alignment by at least 10. And at least two of the good events were pretty costly (-3 morale penalty society-wide).
Now, even though I am almost neutral (47), the Altarians are treating me like I am evil, and they are going to try to cleanse the galaxy of my presence! And I think they might succeed, considering the Torians are also very powerful.
So my question is, is there any way to increase your alignment other than a) waiting for random events, which only appear to affect my alignment by 1 point each time, or
doing the cheezy tactic of building colony ships over and over and colonizing planets with 1 million population, destroy, repeat?
