The Door

I can hear it right now,
that faint
knock,
knock,
knock,
but which door is it coming from?

Upstairs I run to hear it fainter,
down to the basement and fainter still,
listen,
there it is again,
that faint
knock,
knock,
knock.

Always three followed by the culturally appropriate polite pause
inbetween the next set of three,
which ordinarily would be delivered with greater force,
but this faint
knock,
knock,
knock,
leads me to believe they are intentionally soft.

The knockee,
no doubt considers using the doorbell,
and may have even tried,
a device in the upper middle of the door,
it bears the family name,
sits motionless like all others in this neighborhood,
a pavlonian tool whose able function is trumped by its decorative purpose,
this along with the oversized address numbers,
"welcome" mats that separate welcoming between a knob lock and two deadbolts,
just in case one fails.

I am not afraid of who may be there if I answer the door,
but I am afraid,
afraid that if I do answer
the question posed by triplets of four-knuckle impacts on solid oak,
will cease to be asked.

no worries mig, I got the info I was hoping for and promptly deleted it. I was hoping this one wouldn't escape into the archives without you seeing it.
