Disappearing Act

During the course of a game, GalCiv just simply minimizes and disappears. I try to find it but to no avail. Luckily the Autosave comes in handy, albeit I have to repeat some orders to get back to my original position. It’s not only a problem it’s a nuisance. Have you heard of similar problems or is it just my computer?

Let me know.

Thanks

It sounds like it's crashing. If you have Stardock Central, go to the Free Stuff tab and install SmartException. Then, the next time that it crashes, it'll pop up a dialog asking you to submit an error report to us. So then you click submit, open log directory, and that will open the directory with the crash log in it, and you can e-mail it to me at [email protected]. I'll need to know what versions of GalCiv you're using.

I haven't registered yet, the game is on my brothers computer, I'm waiting to get a new video card before I register and download updates, but I'll look into it.

Thanks

Well, depending on what is causing the crashes we may have already fixed it in the updates.

What kind of video card do you have on your computer that you're hesitating to install Gal Civ on it?

An old one, it is the one that came with the computer, but since I don't have another PCI slot or an AGP slot I need a new motherboard.

You will still get the disappearing acts. Smartexception doesn't 'fix' anything it just provides information when things go wrong.

Once you get this 'crash' you need to locate the information files to send to Cari. They will be in the form of Galciv.exe.CRA. The file will probably be in the smart exception directory (just do a search for all .cra files on your computer). Then email the file to Cari (at the address above) and include all details of what was happening in the game at the time)

I get this a lot as well. It first occurs when I:
1. Have been playing for several hours.
2. I initially come across the crash in a turn where a lot of activities occur at once (i.e. events, social improvements, wonder annoucement, etc.)

If I reload it will happen again and again (on subsequent turns) until I open and exit Galactic Civilizations (which suggests the whatever condition causes the crash is cleared in context of a normal shutdown).

This has happened throughout the 1.4 and 1.5 versions. I'll try Smart Exception, but I don't often have time to play long enough to get the crash condition.

Since I'm 'used' it, it really isn't a significant issue to me -- but I thought I'd mention it since the topic came up.
