of California
the smog is brown
the water
the buildings and the people
he glories in it
knowing la raza will win
by breeding out the Anglos
maybe dirt poor white people
will harvest the great central valley
of the Sunny State
white blond haired Anglos
cutting artichokes, packing tomatoes
broccoli
Asparagus
then the grapes in the fall
maybe the farm workers union
will have a voice when the produce
is picked by white hands turned brown
from the sun and life-shortening labor
Caesar Chavez will have finally won
but don’t ask me, I’m half-Japanese.
