How random are senate election results?

I thought they took a number of factors into account - morale, treasury, strength, relations with AI etc. in deciding the result.
Yesterday I loaded a savegame and had an election 2 turns afterward which I lost by a huge margin. A couple of turns later I had a CTD so I reloaded my savegame. Two turns later the elction came up again exepct this time I won by a huge margin.
Just to experiment I tried this a few times and got different results everytime. I assume there is a randomised factor in the results - but didn't realise it had such a huge effect. Or was I seeing an exaggerated level of randomness as I had just reloaded and culture etc. hadn't kicked in correctly as yet.
Don't particularly care one way or the other - just curious as to how the election works.

Well, I cant explain your results, but id be curious
what your morale was in each case as that is the number
I believed the elections were tied to. Perhaps if
your morale is low, its very random, but with decent
morale I have never lost an election.

Doh! That was probably it.
I am the same- in that I get very consistent results and never lose with good morale.
I expected to lose as my morale was pretty low - so was suprised when I actually won the next time.

I've stopped playing my game now because it's fuggered up royally. I have 71% avg morale, and I keep losing in the senate, from 96% to 0%. This has to be a bug. And now the best game I've played is ruined >:(

That really sounds a problem with your game or save. You shouldn't be thrashed in that manner on 71%. You may want to get Stardock to look at it.

Personally, winning senate elections has not been an issue for you. I really can't remember losing my last election.

Heh, I asked myself the same question 30 seconds ago(
about edits), but I think that might be one of the
Admin only functions that Frogboy mentioned cause
I dont see any button for it.

I'm concerned that losing the 50% economics I put in will send me down the tubes if I lose the senate... but I'll try it and see the election after that works properly.

What did you mean by

He means he cant rememeber the last time he lost an
election. He maintains his morale to such an extent
that its never an issue for him.

He likely maintains that morale because it improves
his growth rate signifigantly and that can be vital
to an empires success well beyond any bonus's that
you gain from your government type, which btw would not
include racial pick bonuses that got you to that
50% economics, those bonuses are quite safe.

Sorry, I meant "not been an issue for me".

I usually pick up entertainment networks, stadiums and keep my tax rate about 40-45% and if possible morale resources. Once you terraform your planets, your morale shoots back up.

Alright, here's my stupid question: how can you (reasonably) predict election results. I've been going on the average approval rating. Am I wrong?

Not so simple. ;) You can´t change government if your faction is not in power.

ObsidiOn: Try ridiculously low taxes (20% or so). If that doesn´t win you the next elections, it´s probably a bug.
