Another Silly Question about Growing Pains (population growth bonus)

I've played a couple different games now, all with the difficulty at easy. I took the advantage that gives my people 70% growth bonus and I only populate 15+ PQ planets. Yet, all the other aliens seem to out do me when it comes to proliferating like rabbits. What is up with this? I thought maybe I was expanding too much, since it seems new colonizers to planets can often die. But that didn't seem to be it. I thought I wasn't colonizing enough and sent out lots of ships with 100M people on them to various places. That worked a little better, but still I fell behind. So can anyone tell me just what's up with that? Why aren't my people randomly splitting into two fully formed humans while theirs explode into thousands of mini-thems?

I think I may have answered my question in part. I managed to procure 300+bc a month in payment from various alien races for technologies. Because of this, I decided not to keep my tax rate at the highest level it can go (before the income starts dropping from people not reporting their taxes). When I did this, I noticed a marked rise in population and thought to myself, "Do happy people screw more?!" When I realized the answer was yes, I felt elated. Perhaps this has been my problem. Smart me.

You're right. Colonists copulate a lot more with higher morale. Try keeping your morale at 100%, the population gain is astronomical (quite a lot more then when morale is 99%).

With morale 100 population grows 2x faster = 0,06*(1+PopGrowthBonus) on this planet. So, population of 1000 will be ~1102 (on 2nd turn, with 70% Pop growth bonus)
With morale 54-99 population grows at a standart rate = 0,03*(1+PopGrowthBonus) on this planet. So, population of 1000 will be ~1051

Higher population = higher tax revunes in the long run, right? More people being taxed?

So far I tend to max the tax rate until wartime... Iusually have the trade good anyway. Might have to rethink that.
