What Price Point Should Microsoft Set for Windows 7?

What Price Point Should Microsoft Set for Windows 7?

The momentum for Windows 7 continues to build, and it seems so far that Microsoft is doing a  good job at redeeming the Windows name after Vista.  Windows 7 is fast, seemingly very stable, application compatibility seems good, and the reaction from the tech community and media is far more favorable than it has been in the past couple of years.

So the technical side of Windows 7 is going pretty well, and we haven’t seen much out of marketing yet, but there have been many discussions online about how much Windows 7 will actually cost consumers.  Some have suggested it should be free, which is quite ridiculous, and others speculate it will be similar to what Windows Vista was.

One of my biggest displeasures with Windows Vista wasn’t so much on the technical side, as it was with the actual price and the lack of license bundles.  With some Vista licenses averaging out around $200, it just wasn’t economically feasible to outfit my entire house with copies of Vista, which I would have liked to have done.  I have roughly 5 PC’s in my house, so give or a take a bit, it could have easily cost over $1000 to get my home setup with Vista.

Now I certainly don’t expect Windows 7 to be free, but I’m now wondering how Microsoft will set the pricing for new and upgrade purchases.  I really hope it reasonably priced, because going too high will have a real negative impact in my opinion.  I would like to see a simple upgrade from either Vista or XP for $99, with a 3-license family pack for $150.  I think that would be very competitive, and get even more people to upgrade.

What do you think?

I've been using W7, and I love it! I liked Vista, and 7 is much better than Vista. It's more streamlined and snappy. It's kind of like Vista with the XP feel.

And that upgrade option is awesome! I oversee an office with 8 other computers besides my own. I will definitely be trying to persuade my boss to go for this deal! It would cost me $800 now, or $2400 later. For me, it's a no brainer.

All my other machines have Vista, and they'd be fine to stay there, but I'm beginning to think that it's really worth the leap.

I 'avoided' Vista....successfully....migrating from XP Pro straight to Win7 RC ....and am liking it more than any other MS OS I've used in the past.  [The first would have been Dos4, I think]...;)

I'll pay whatever MS thinks is right....no problemo...;)

Dailytech.com

"From June 26 to July 11, while supplies last Microsoft will offer special preorder pricing.  It will be offering in the U.S. Windows 7 Home Premium for $49.99 and Windows 7 Professional for $99.99, a savings of $70 and $100 respectively (In the U.S. preorders are for upgrade versions).  Canada and Japan enjoy similar deals."

It looks like Amazon.com is still taking pre-orders.

PS. It only took me three edits to figure out how to hyperlink. :P

Braggart! I hate it when someone goes (not one but) seven better than me. :-" :w00t:

Actually, it's 8.... Oz isn't on MS' list of priorities when it comes to this pre-order discount thing.  Seems we have to wait until October and pay full price... which'll be more than the difference between the USD and AUD, as it was with Vista when it was released here.

Yup, we'll pay the difference and then some... the gov't (GST and import tax) and suppliers/importers will have to get in for their cut, despite the DVD's most likely being produced at MS Australia in Sydney.

 XO >:(

I don't care what price they put on it. I'll buy it regardless. I'll just buy myself an OEM version if the retail/upgrade is too expensive, I don't need MS support.

I saw an ad in todays paper from Best Buy.  Pre-order an upgrade to Windows7 Home Premium for $49.95.  Good until July 11, 2009.

See here for half price deal on pre-purchase.

What's the saying?  The more the merrier?  I guess the more info you can get to the people is better.  Sometimes it gets confusing though.  Like, for instance, all the threads on Fences bugs for example...

I would say wait ... the OEM releases of Win7 will be released 30 days after the

retail box. You will be able to purchase them from you local e-tailor ... at a better

price. Right now it's just a waiting game ...

Like that's going to happen!  And Ford is going to be giving away its next model because the tyres went flat on some previous ones.

Microsoft sets Windows 7 prices: http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/ptech/06/25/cnet.windows7.pricing.upgrade/index.html  Looks like if you pre-order for an upgrade only, you get a SUBSTANTIAL discount except for Ultimate.  No pre-order on that yet.

According to your dictionary, you are correct... but according to mine, I AM correct.

Oh, and the Oxford dictionary was based on the English language and written before yer Websters, so I'd have to say the original is more correct than the latter.
