Successionist rebel scum!

Need a little help here - ran slap bang into a problem in a gigantic game with planets peeling off to join the tin men Yor. I thought I'd built up a nice stable empire; well defended, econ OK, research powered up searching for the final frontier - now all my juicy planets are departing! Any strategies/research/structures that other are using as culrutal defence? How can I pull these rebel scum back into line!!

generally by the time your losing planets, its pretty
much to late to stop the avalanche in that sector.

In your other sectors, start building starbases
with cultural improvements, this will prevent them
from being converted.

You can also build/buy world improvements that posses
'cultural resist' such as news center.

And keep an eye on the planet's image. If it has a skull next to it you are in big trouble as you discovered. You will then have a short period in which to attempt to build (or add to) starbase/s with culture modules, OR rushbuy a news centre (I've changed the spelling as I presume your planets are settled by Aussies). Oh, and the top right map can show cultural dominance for each sector, and at the top you can click on a tab which shows the exact share of cultural dominance for each civ. If your sector goes about 200 points behind another civ you are in trouble.

Thanks guys - even following your suggestions didn't save me, I'm afraid. I backtracked to an autosave just around the time planets started falling, built copious numbers of starbases and news centres - but the planets just fell like dominos. All this after sweating over a Gigantic map...grrrr....Ah well, an excellent lesson learned though.

Are you using espionage? If so, you may want to see if anyone is attempting destabilization. In my current game, the Arceans were doing just that and wrecking havack on the Altairan. It is likely that I was targeted but thankfully I have been building cultural resist projects.

Use improvements for cultural resistance and culture output.
Keep warships in orbit.
Build morale boosters. Long-term, this includes boosting PQ.
Use propaganda.
Use cultural starbases -- there's a lot of modules in that category, use 'em.
Get the influence/morale resources.
Lower taxes if you must to pump morale up.
If they're overpopulated, load 'em up and send them elsewhere.
Trade for any trade good which affects morale or influence.

Those are the main things to do, I think. A world is unlikely to defect unless it's culturally dominated, unhappy, AND not that heavily protected
