Discrepancy in information

From the domestic information panel, my tech was 6th. But on graph in the riht part of the game screen says I am second. This discrepancy lasted a while. Why there are discrepancy between these two information and which one is correct?

If I understand correctly, the graph is how much research power you have per turn; i.e. playing with the sliders will affect this graph considerably. The "technology" entry in the rankings refers to the combined value of all researched techs.

Yes, I believe mwoody is right. It took me a while to realize this as well.

BTW, it seems kinda silly to have this graph displaying all this information about other races without even investing one credit into espionage. This makes the game internally inconsistant.
