Using "Threat of War", how do you extort money from AI?

I cannot seem to "convince" the AI to give me their money even when I'm really strong and all over their space.

I've not yet tried extortion based purely on threat... If you have a decisive military advantage, just park strike groups near their big fleets and important starbases, wait for a good moment (or don't wait, if it is a good moment), declare war, clean them out, and offer them peace for a suitable price :)

When you're at peace, I find you usually can't get the AI to hand over all of it's money just to stay out of trouble with you. Given a large enough military advantage, they'll part with significant sums, but it is certainly easier to knock them silly and then ask for the money. And tech, and planets, and influence.

I have routinely clobbered the AI then asked for 1000s of bc for 100+ months! Needless to say, this made you extremely rich and completely ruined the AI. I have no problem with this!

So far the only amount I get in extortion is 100 bc for 0 months.

To stop a war, the AI will sometimes max out for a long period of time... but they won't submit to the same type of extortion they demand.

(I once had a game where on one turn, about 3 different AIs demanded 1500 BCs)
