Alternative to Metaverse: Save your games at the start.

The simple way to compare skills without Metaverse is to play the same games. If you find himself in a poor position at the start at high difficulty save your game before doing anything and share savegame with others :) Personally I would be interested to play the same games as other players. Maybe we can get it organized somehow?

Currently I have my last game saved from the start: Incredible, tiny/rare, poor start with one planet.

This would be very interesting though I worry about
the seriel number being part of the saved game and
what this means for possible pirating.

You might look into how to make saved games safe to
share.

I would assume that sharing of games is allowed. Saved game is kind of document you can create with a word processor. You need to license word processor, but you own the documents you've created with it. And anyway, what would be the point for Stardock to claim ownership on the saved games?

I would think shared save game couldn't be posted to Metaverse, because it must have unique game ID to prevent people from posting the same game several times, but for suggested purpose it would be enough to report win or loss, as the score doesn't reflect skill anyway.

In any case I would like to hear clarification from Stardock if sharing of the save games is permitted and whether the games started from the same copy of Galciv and finished using different ones could be submitted to Metaverse.

nothing to stop people reloading the saved game again and again until they get the best possible start. Some form of tournament game where saved games are encoded and can only be used once would be nice. Has already been suggested to stardock.

we just had this: a page or two back is the game of the month challenge.

someone saved a game, put it out to be downloaded and people were playing it. there are different categories for alliance, tech wins, etc.

My main dislike for this kind of competition is that instead of playing to win the game one have to play to maximize the score (whatever method is used to calculate it). Therefore I was suggesting to share difficult games, where the victory is not guaranteed by itself and one has to put efforts just to win somehow.

Scoring (for now, as long as there is no other suggestions)

Everyone get temporary score of
1) Cultural victory - Number of turns to win*Military Score (in statistics screen)
2) Alliance victory - Number of turns to win/Numer of major races in game
3) Tech Victory - Number of turns to win/(Number of techs researched by you / Total number of techs (in statistics screen))
4) Military victory - Number of turns to win

Then lowest temorary score in each category is the best, this player gets a score of 100.
Every other player's score in this category will be equal to 100*(lowest temporary score)/(player's temporary score)

So, we'll have different rankings in each category.

i like this since i think ellestar's scoring system helps negate the "play an extra 200 turns to milk the score" tactic.

Ok. Your suggestions about masochisitic challenge? Starting conditions etc.

I suggest to make challenge consist of several games. Each one of highest difficulty with bad starting position, so it will be hard to win. The more often one wins the better he will be rated. We may have one game per week then for example. And I don't see reason to forbid people to play and submit older games.
