Zazen: a practice for peace

Zazen, the practice of seated meditation is a powerful tool for the development of a peaceful universe.

To practice, one simply finds a comfortable place, sits down on a cushion, crosses one's legs, and places one's attention on the breath. In this way, we are beginning to practice the Buddha's way.

We come to realize that peace is not something external. Peace involves no one but one's self. To quiet the self is to create peace right here, right now.

When we practice zazen, all things are what they are, no problem.

If we practice zazen daily we begin to take our practice off the cushion and into the world. We recognize that our mind and body are one and we are truely one with all that is there before us. No you, no me, no other. No difference. No difficulty. Just this.

When the thought arises that someone or something is disturbing, know that thoughts are just thoughts and the only power they have is the power we give to them. Just watch those thoughts. They will come and go. They have no reality. They are just thoughts. So why be disturbed by them?

Please begin this wonderful practice. Zazen is more than powerful tool: It is a way of life.

First of all, welcome to JU, and I hope you stick around for a while.  I'm the lone Buddhist here, from what i can tell....and I miss having someone else to talk to about it!

I practice zazen as and when I feel the need to.  At one time I practiced daily...it has helped me to get through illness, grief, stress, hardship....in shirt, it has been an invaluable tool

Good article!

With palms together,

Thank you Dharmagrl. I will try to post something daily or nearly daily. I am a Zen Priest and I have many duties. But, I do what I can. Daily practice is very important even five minutes of zazen can make a difference. It is a commitment we make to bring peace to the world.,

I look forward to hearing from you again. Be well,
