Transport questions

Played a game where I invaded two minors and a major, then had 50 or so extra transports. It was killing my economy after the wars.

What happins to the population if they are disbanded?
Unloading on a planet relaunching and disbanding is painful.
What happins to the troops when you sell the transports?

I got so fed up trying to deal with all those stupid ships, I ended up giving them to an AI.

There's got to be a better way of dealin' with transports, what am I missing?

Those troops are gone if you disband the ship.  They go with the transport when you trade it.

Use combat transports to load and send ppl to populate other small colonies.

Transports are good if they are armed. This is something that might happen in united planets. :d

Is there any way to tell if a system will not become unhappy if I unload a transport on it?

It would be cool if you could automaticly send it back to its home world and disband it or keep it in orbit there without having to empty an disband it --this is very painful--

A couple of suggestions:

1) Off-load all your extra TR's on a sub-prime world and park your fleet there. If your fleet is sufficiently powerful, even "1" morale colonies will not revolt or leave your Empire. (This is achievable with 3-4 Dreadnoughts and/or 2-3 fully-mined Military-resource SB's.) Use propaganda on this world - it only costs 10-15bc per turn. Re-embark when you need a new attack force.

This works best on a newly conquered planet - it gives you a "base of operations" in your enemy's territory from which to enforce your demands.

2) PQ 30+ worlds can support enormous populations. Send your extra TR's there, off-load and disband them. (This adds to your final score, by the way, as it is based in part on overall population.)

3) Use spare, empty TR's as "speed-bumps" to protect important stars & SB's. Each one costs 1mp to attack. Circle the wagons!

4) If faced with low morale due to overpopulation, build colony ships instead of TR's. Colony ships can embark unlimited numbers of people and cost far less to maintain. Downside: they're unrecyclable; TR's can be loaded/unloaded until destroyed.

5) Research Extravaganza to obtain Stadiums. They are one of the most cost-effective morale-bonus structures.

One other idea:

Use Combat TR's as your system defenders. They have one of the best DF & HP to cost ratios in the game. With shipyard bonuses and parked in orbit, they are frequently better defenders than BattleAxes, BattleHammers or even Battleships! Then, once you need to either off-load excess population to improve morale, or assemble a strike force, you're ready to go!

Right on Def. Since you can't park a fully loaded CT on a planet without it unloading, I usually base them on my key resource Starbases.

5 CTs on a Starbase...makes that starbase pretty much impregnable until Overlords come out.
