Patching woes

Okay, I've been running the unpatched (version 1.00) game for a long time and decided perhaps it was time to download the patch and get myself current. Now that I've patched, the game wont run!! it hangs for a few minutes and then crashes. Help!!

I'm a relative novice when it comes to software problems (hardware, yes, software... not so much)

Also, I'm running this on a near min spec laptop (my only option I'm afraid...)
