Are We Alone Out There

Hi All

Brand new to "SoaSE" and very much looking forward to something I can really sink my teeth into.

Having played the tutorials, I decided I'd like to run a small map first off, set up with no other races, so that I can simply expand my lonely empire and experiment with all the shiny buttons there are to press, before launching into a new game with some competition.

So I selected the small random 1v1 map and I disabled my oponent.... at least I thought I did. But once the game began I sent a scout frigate to one of my two neighbouring planets and LOOK OUT! I'm getting shot at!

From memory I think the Frigates shooting at me (and I was outnumbered as well) had the name of the planet on them, but suddunly realising there were Pirates in the game and the option to disable them, I did that too just in case and I started again.

At first all seemed ok and my scout was alone by the next planet. BUt then two enemy frigates warped (sorry...phazed) in and started taking chunks out of the poor fella.

Who's shooting at me??

Many thanks

Badger

either the standerd rebels at every world at the start of the game or your enemy AIs

The Ai ships will have some sort of colored picture of the ship if you zoom out a bit and the rebels and pirates in the game are allways grey pictures of the ship.

hope the helps

there are a few "rebel" ships at every planet and asteroid that belong to just that planet. so you have to fight a bit to be able to colonize the planet. u cant disable them. sometimes in uncolonizable areas there are "rebel" pirates that dont belong to the normal pirate group too, and theyr just like the planet rebels, you cant disable them.

Militia forces will always be present in colonizable planets (except dead asteroids) and Pirate ships will be present in their base and some plasma storms (for storms, its usually one flak and light frigate).

Even if you disable Pirates in the options menu, if the map has Pirate Bases, they will still spawn ships and defense platforms there: they just don't perform any raids.

Thanks guys. I'll start again with all this in mind.

Dead asteroids, space junk, asteroid fields, and magnetic storms are always undefended.  Asteroids always have one TEC siege frigate and one light frigate.  Ice, volcanic, terran, and desert planets have random numbers and types of defenders (always TEC units).  They always have at least one siege frigate, and may also have light frigates, long range frigates, flak frigates, and heavy cruisers.  Typically 6-12 units defend these planets types, and up to four of any kind may appear.   Gas giants and plasma storms are always defended by one pirate light frigate and one pirate flak frigate.

These defenders won't chase you if you leave their gravity well, and will always prioritize their attacks against a colony frigate.  They're a great way to level up your first capital ship, even if you don't intend to colonize the planet yet.  When deciding where to colonize early on, sometimes it's a good idea to take a look at how many defenders (and of what type) are in each planet.  If you see lots of heavy cruisers, you might want to save that one for later.  If you just see light frigates and siege frigates, it's easy pickings.

A good tip for tackling a well defended planet (TEC):- Charge in with an Akkan capital ship and colonise the planet, set your Akkan to attack any Siege Frigates. Set your constructor to build two or three Gauss Defence Platforms close together. Move your Akkan around the gravity well until the platforms are constructed then move it close to them. Your Akkan and platforms will then take out the rebel ships...

Don't forget to research the Repair Platform so you can repair your Akkan - it will take severe damage ;)

Not strictly true - I have seen planets with more then 4 of a given unit - normally LF, but sometimes somethign else like LRM... But that is the rate cases

I had a terran with 21 militia frigates!
