capital ship collision problem with my own star base

During battle or just trying to leave the planet if starbase is in a direct path that the capital ships are going they get hung up on the starbase and each other eventually the problem is corrected but very slowly this leads to undue damage during battle since capital ships have a problem lining up correctly for weapons fire so my capital ships are not facing the enemy correctly for fire weapons so they take more damage then needed. I have seen this happen with structures also starbases seem to be much more of a problem though. Also if you are trying to get your capital ships to a big battle in another planet this could lead to a much longer delay in getting the ships to the planet for support. With the planetary structures such as turrets, repair bays, ect.. I usually put my capital ships next to the repair bay after a heavy battle. I put all my structures close together so turrets can protect them easier, If battle comes to planet while capital ships are close to repair bay they try to engage enemy but end up getting hung up in the structures and slows movement greatly.

Well, I have been playing SINS for a long time, recently added Entrenchment, and have had absolutly NO problems.

HOWEVER....  With this last upgrade (to both) I too am experiencing ships running into structures, and asteroids, etc.

Have a game going with 4 stars, 8 players and just today after the upgrades, 5 ships I built at a factory, made their usual wide turn out, and ran right into a metal asteroid, slowed, jerked around a bit and finally passed it!  Yes it is annoying, and I agree that it slows things down a lot.  Fortunatly that particular factory was at a planet with only the asteroids and a Starbase.  I can't imagine what would take place if it had been at one of my other planets with 15 or so gun turrets, trade port, starbase and other structures in it's orbital path!!

Yep, somethingn needs to be done about that one for certain!  Can't imagine there aren't more posts about this problem!

Gotta wait and see I guess...  :S

I have sent a e-mail to [email protected] for this issue along with 3 other issues. I posted here on stardock forum. I been playing sins since it first came out also. Before entrenchment it was an amazing game now its just so much riddled with bugs. thank goodness though I have not had the minidumps, but I have not played anything more than myself and 1 comp on easy so far. Just trying to get all my achievements again before I start going for the fun stuff :) I usually play 4 to 6 comps on hard in huge random multi, but with the extreme slow downs at end game I don't think it will be possible with entrenchment like before entrenchment.

I sent a e-mail to ironclad for this issue and here is the response in quotes:

"No aspect of the collision avoidance was changed in Entrenchment compared to Sins, it may simply be the case that you did not notice the behavior before or that your structure placement strategy has changed in light of the new possibilities the expansion offers. Ships are always going to have pathfinding issues given Sins' physics model when attempting to move through clustered structures, taking that into account both when issuing movement orders and when placing the structures in the first place is part of the tactics of the game."
I really do not remember this being an issue before enchrenchment.

I have never had issues with capital ships running into other objects until starbases came along.  Having just played all day yesterday with the new expansion, I noticed it happening frequently, as did the friend with whom I was gaming.

Well, I have not yet upgraded to Entrentchment and I find that there is a reasonable amount of collisions, or "quasi-collisions" as described by LORD_KRELL;

"Have a game going with 4 stars, 8 players and just today after the upgrades, 5 ships I built at a factory, made their usual wide turn out, and ran right into a metal asteroid, slowed, jerked around a bit and finally passed it!  Yes it is annoying, and I agree that it slows things down a lot.  Fortunatly that particular factory was at a planet with only the asteroids and a Starbase.  I can't imagine what would take place if it had been at one of my other planets with 15 or so gun turrets, trade port, starbase and other structures in it's orbital path!!"

It may just be that in light of how almost bug-free the original Sins tended to be, such small details were overlooked.

Although, to be fair, it is VERY annoying when trying to move a large fleet through a cluttered gravity well, or if the "all jump together" setting is on with a large fleet.

A reasonable fix might be to have ships plot out IN ADVANCE their courses, and have fleets plot all courses. This might lead to very excessive memory-dumping, with the whole thing having to be redone any time something unexpected happens, but ships wouldn't be crashing into stuff anymore.

Thoughts?

I'm ok with the collisions over more cpu intensive anti-collision procedures. I just never noticed this before and thought it was pretty odd behavior. Its been a very long time though since I have played regularly (from release till about 2 weeks after 3rd patch of original sins).

Rafi,

Did you notice the collisions before the last couple of patches to sins, I think when entrenchment came out they patched original sins a couple of times too?
