How do we eliminate negative income?

I had the great trade economy going when the economy went to hell. NO many how I adjusted the economic sliders, I had negative income. What can we do in cases like this?

Sell some techs. Sell some ships. Remove some improvements that are costing maintenance.

Set government spending to 0%, taxes to 40% and post here your revenue/spending numbers (on the same screen), number of planets, empire morale.

I did set government spending to zero and that didn't work. I did sell off most ships, and that washn't enough. This should NOT have to happen!

Don't forget that your buildings have maintenance costs too. I find that if your sliders are way out of balance your net income goes down slightly. Putting them close to 33/33/34 or so helps some.

I just wanted to know your income and spending distribution to give an advice. Maybe you have too high spending on leases?

Perhaps at the start of the game then you don't have bonuses to production/research? This is because of rounding you get lesser sum of spending to miliatry, social and research and so less net income with balanced slider settings compared to 100% spending in one field. Balanced spending is worse IMHO.

Build starbases with economic modules along your trade routes. Mine economic resources. Sell tech, trade goods to AIs. Go bully a rich weakling into giving you all his current treasury for 50+ turns. Don't take your incoming tribute income for granted, as it'll end some day (might be what happened in your case if it was sudden).

I found that when I stopped leasing in the opening, most of my economic problems went away. You get a much better return using your money to fund at 100%, than you do by leasing.

How dooes one stop leasing or better yet, avoid leasing all together?

How do we build economic modules with constrictors? All I can do is place them on resources and I get a message "do I want to harvest the resource?

1. Don't lease.
2. Put a frieghter on every trade route you have (2 at first, more with tech). Even fairly short routes can make a lot of money if they are to highly populated alien planets.
3. Set your tax rate at 39% and leave it there.
4. Send additional constructors to a starbase to expand it with economic and other bonus modules. Actually for resources you probably want to concentrate on mining only... production bonus modules only effect the sector they are in, and a lot of the time the resource isn't in the same sector as one of your systems.

Unbalanced spending may be more effective in the long run, but it always has costs. You may be able to outpace the loss by increasing your income faster using other methods (increasing economy bonuses from social improvements or starbases, improving economy or trade abilities from research, opening trade routes faster, etc.), but the closer to balanced your spending is, the more income you'll earn during a single turn's time.
