Of course, like everything else, pies end up connected to politics (who gets the best butter, who gets the fruit from the bottom of the barrel), and some fights over recipe standards get almost extreme enough to resemble religious conflicts.
p.s. The sweet pie reference above is in no way meant to demean or ignore members of savory pie communities. Samosas and pulled-pork empanadas are very respectable pastry shell paths.
