To take over a planet:
1. Research the tech that lets you build transports (Impulse Drive)
2. Build one or more transports
3. When you try to launch the transport it will prompt you for how many troops to load onto the transport.
4. Move the transport to the system you wish to assault.
5. Move the transport on to the system.
6. Choose the type of assault (every type other than traditional costs money)
7. Repeat until you have worn down the planetary defenders.

Things to be aware of:
1. It can take a lot of troops to successfully assault a system with one or more high population planets.
2. Any troops you load onto transports are taken directly from the population pool of the system that launches the transport. You can cripple yourself if you're not careful.

Some other things to keep in mind. You will generally win a 1-1 battle with planets providing that you have supperior ground troop technology.

If you want to slant the battle in your favor, there are varying types of warfare, such as info warfare, mini soldiers, mass drivers, and core detonation. While this may turn the advantage in your favor, it can also ruin the target planet.

From experimentation, I've figured the advantages on both sides translates into what ratio of troops you need relative to theirs to win. So if you go into a battle with a 14 advantage to their 7, you can probably win in coditions where you have half the number of the computer troops or greater (so 500 mil versus 1 billion, you should come out on top)

So if you have adv of 10 and the other guy has 10 and you're outnumbered, you may want to try something other than traditional warfare or else its going to get painful.

Also if you take more than one transport into battle, and say each transport has 1000 troops. If you lose only 500 troops, you'll lose only one transport from the battle. The other will remain available to you

Also, one more thing.

When you research Battleship Technology, a new transport class will be available, called the "Combat Transport". You may have to download the Bonuspack to get access to this unit, but it is more resiliant to enemy attacks, and can cary much more troops.

It also doubles up as a Dreadnought when a certain UP issue comes up... :)

Good point on the combat transport thing. They carry about 5 billion troops, and I've seen their defense rating get as high as the 30s before (kinda funny to watch battleships drop against a CT)

And put your transports / coombat transports in a fleet along with their escorts, and move the entire fleet at once.

If you invade with n transports not in a fleet you get n tiny attacks. If you invade with n transports in a fleet you get 1 large attack, which can greatly reduce your casualties, plus also saves you money if you use a non-traditional attack as you only buy that once, and the advantage gained is relative to your advantage factor, not some absolute bonus e.g. it's more valuable with a larger attack.
