How are player ranks determined?

As far as I know, no players know the formula. We just know that if you submit games, you go up once in a while.

ranks are awarded by stardock based on useful feedback from players and general usefulness of players on the forums. Number of posts or submissions has NO bearing.

D'oh.
My answer was for forum ranks. Player ranks are calculated from an individual formula still being worked upon by T-Man. I don't think he's yet implemented ranks above captain. It's just a simple score>X AND games played > Y. Possible additions he was discussing was played all galaxy sizes or score > Z for each galaxy size.
