Direct3D crash on startup?

If you are getting a crash when you start the game, something along the lines of being unable to create a Direct3D device, please update your drivers; try deleting your cache files.

XP: C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Gas Powered Games

Vista/Win7: C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Gas Powered Games

 

This worked for a friend of mine.

I appreciate the suggestion but unfortunately this simply doesn't solve the problem for all of us.  Particularly because for many of us that folder doesn't even exist.  I think the game has to start at least once in order to create it.
